1680 WPRR AM

Post by Gary Hunt » Wed Jul 08, 2020 12:03 pm

Just noticed this morning while scanning the AM band, 1680 WPRR is off the air. Picking up 1690 Chicago pretty good now in the Forest Hills area.

Congrats to Mr. Hunt and Lucky 615. WPRR has received more attention today than it has in years. IMHO.

If I Heart GR really wanted to save money, it would sublet two of it's three floors at 77 Monroe Center.

Goodrich Theaters has been in bankruptcy court for awhile. If any personal guaranties are involved, that may explain why 95.3 was sold and why 1680 is now silent.

1680 has been on and off the air quite a bit lately. I don't know if they are having transmitter issues or what the problem might be. Usually the translator(s) have still been on the air while the AM is off the air. I did notice that 1680 was off the air today, but the past 2 weeks I've been at the lake in Newaygo county, and their 102.5 translator doesn't get up this way (even though most of the other GR translators can be heard up here), so I don't know if the translator is on the air today or not. Speaking of the 102.5 translator, it's also not unusual for that facility to be on the air with dead air for several weeks at at time. Must be no one at the station actually listens to it.

As of today the 1680 AM remains off the air and website streaming's off. 102.5 FM translator's on the air and primarily airing music, with a local call-in talk show weekday afternoons (Tyrone Bynum).

I hear 1680 is back on the air today, tuned in just after 12 noon, expecting to hear Thom Hartman, but all I got was urban music on both the AM and the FM translator.

I can confirm hearing on skywave over 100 miles away, an Urban Adult Contemporary like format on 1680, which faded in and out with the station on 1680 near Philadelphia playing music in Spanish. That station IDed but it faded until they said Philadelphia as part of the New Jersey COL ID. It is WTTM. There were no announcements at all on WPRR between tracks, and no TOH ID that I heard. It was just a juke box type format.

Is THAT where they got the idea for the 486-SX?

That explains why WIOG has been coming thru very good lately where Im at, probably can get 95.3 from Mt Pleasant too.

WGVU-FM took over the 95.3 MHz translator on the GR / Wyoming border a few weeks ago; it is broadcasting at usual power.

So basically a revival of Tyrone Bynum's format on 640 AM many years ago
