N. Michigan 2012 Format Questions

Post by cckadlec » Wed Apr 08, 2020 10:34 pm

Some help needed on the following stations shown in bold to check if the station names or formats listed are correct for August 2012.

As some of you probably know from my incessant posting of bandscans over the past few years (way, way more to come to my website this spring and summer with this extra time I have now), I do a lot of coastal bandscans throughout the Great Lakes. More than 150 scans from nearly 100 beach sites.

This one was a basic scan - done only with the less sensitive car radio - in 2012 in Mackinaw City. While I have the original paper somewhere in my pile of old scans and notes, I haven't yet located it and I'm not sure if it even has all the details I need. When I typed the scan out at that time, I omitted the station power and station names. Trying to salvage the scan to retype it to 2020 standards to match my other scans has been annoying, but I've managed nonetheless with various sources, though station names usually requires Wikipedia searches where many station history details are mentioned, but not all include details.

For those who live up that way and/or are very familiar with all these details, the ones shown in bold are not completely certain. I could use some people to review those few stations to tell me if the station name was correct for August 2012.

All other details have been checked for 2012, such as station power and call letters, so I'm ONLY looking for help with the station names for those stations.

Any help is really appreciated. I have NUMEROUS scans from 2018 and 2019 from Mackinaw and St. Ignace for those who are interested, which include all the stations as heard on a portable instead of just a car radio.

*94.5 WOEZ MI Mackinaw City / The Bear //98.1 / 50kw / perfect (6 mi.)
Pretty sure 94.5 was The Bear at that time (not exactly 100% //98.1 but generally enough). Calls changed to WOEZ right before this scan was conducted, for whatever reason.

99.7 W259AH MI Petoskey / The Promise FM / 10w / perfect + 99.9 (24 mi.)
Unsure if this was repeating The Promise FM because info shows its primary station was WQHN, which is now The Promise FM on 100.9 but WAS at that time IPR.

*99.9 WHAK MI Rogers City / The Wave / 50kw / perfect (44 mi.)

As far as I know, 101.9 was known as "Sunny Country 101.9" rather than simply "Sunny 101.9", which was what they went by in their AC days. And I believe around 2012, 98.1/107.1 and 94.5/93.9 were their own simulcasts when it came to The Bear. Don't really know if 94.5 simulcasted 93.9 or the other way around. And the 99.7 translator would probably have been relaying WPHN before WQHN came on the scene. I wasn't really big into local radio at the time, as this is simply what I remember learning about, so I could be wrong for all I know.

Going through my airchecks I have WLDR and WCCW, but not the date of your bandscan. Both were recorded on 5/28/12. If interested in listening to these, message me.

WLDR: 'Sunny Country 1O1.9'
WCCW: 'Classic hits 1O7 5 FM WCCW...' beginning of TOH ID

I hope this helps.

Thanks to both of you. Much appreciated.

I saw the Classic Hits 107.5 vs. Oldies 107.5 but the timeline was a little vague. I remember Sunny Country now, too. I have RDS readouts from that summer, which helped with some other details. I'm sure I'll run across the actual written scan and see what details I have, but scans back then are nothing like I write them out today with notes every half hour to help with programming comparisons (such as public radio programs when I need to check schedules to confirm, etc.)

I have some other old scans from back in the day I would like to add to my website as well. I suppose for some historical purposes, it could be interesting given the surge of translators that have appeared in past years, which was the reason I drove thousands of miles doing scans across the Great Lakes the past few years trying to beat the translators as they cover the distant signals. The 102.7 in Alpena sometimes makes it harder to hear WRVM from Parry Sound and other points on the Georgian Bay, so those things are frustrating.

If you need any more, let me know. I started airchecking in 1987 and all are in mp3 format. The early years were originally done on cassette and all have been converted. During those years I had access to a cottage on Torch Lake, and have that area well covered.
