KLT lives in the far north!!! 93.5 to dump Country.

Covers all of Northern Lower Michigan (from Ludington to Tawas northward), as well as the Straits Area and Soo Region.

KLT lives in the far north!!! 93.5 to dump Country.

Post by MWmetalhead » Mon Feb 24, 2020 5:47 pm

I had a sneaking suspicion 93.5 *might* dump Country. I figured there was a 50/50 chance of that happening at some point, although I didn't think the switch would be pulled this quickly.

Now we know why Midwestern Broadcasting didn't want 98.9. :blink

This is great news for fans of Classic Rock in the tip o' the mitt!

Any ideas as to why? Does WMKC have a controlling share of the Northern part of the Market? Is Country dying as a format, the young audience migrating to Crossover AC? Both?

Will WKLZ 98.9 go off the air soon? Will 93.5 take over the WKLZ call letters? Both?

Will the WBCM call letters go back to 1440 in Bay City?

Is THAT where they got the idea for the 486-SX?

As far as Country listening goes, WMKC indeed has a commanding share in the northern reaches of the market. Probably a 3:1 advantage over WTCM-FM/WBCM-FM, I would say. That's been true for many, many years.

Country "dying" as a format? Are you joking? It's one of the most successful terrestrial FM formats there is!

My guess is K-Love will be heard on 98.9 very soon...perhaps this week. Good question about the calls letters. I'd be quite surprised if the WKLZ call sign does not migrate from 98.9 to 93.5. Not sure if that means WBCM-FM will wind up at 98.9 MHz or not.

A good chunk of far northern lower MI will now only have access to one (!!!) FM country station with a good signal - that station being Big Country 102.9, of course. 103.5 WTCM's signal is crappy from Charlevoix and Otsego Counties northward.

I guess I thought with the softness of the Nash FM ratings, and defection of "Country" artists to AC like Taylor Swift, Country as a Contemporary format was in a downward trend.

Nash FM's softness is due to terrible programming strategy (especially during the Dickey era of Cumulus), not the country format itself. If you look at many of those same markets, you'll often find one or more Country stations with strong ratings.

The "downward trend" you describe is a matter of personal preference. I certainly am not a fan of the invasion of music from faux country artists such as Sam Hunt, Dan + Shay, etc. I hate hearing those artists on country radio. I think it creates an opening for 90's & early 2K's based Country stations to take shape.

EMF has always worked with sellers on call letters and intellectual property, since they don't need or want it. Would not be surprised to see a call letter change request in the next few days..

Is 97.7 still doing "Straits Country" out of Cheboygan? It's a preset. I'm betting 102.9 has a BIG advantage over them.

No. 97.7 is pro-Trump political talk most of the time, and Oldies the rest of the time.

80s/90s/early 00s country is doing very well (look at Cincinnati's ratings where a pair of rimshot throwback country stations is T-4)

Ironically, the WKLZ call sign would fit perfectly on a K-Love station!

The opposite case (where WTCM is the only country station with a good signal) is true south and west of Traverse City, especially in Benzie County and a large portion of Manistee County.

There is no way 93.5 gives KLT better coverage in the North than 98.9. I live north of Traverse City and 98.9 is heard in a ton of businesses where TCM is nowhere. I tune to 93.5 once in a while, it's weak in my car. I'm glad to have KLT staying in the North but the signal is not as good. They should have dumped 93.5 and bought 106.7.

KLT is trash. I don't like their vibe, can't stand Terri Ray. I mean how many times can you listen to Foreigner, Foghat, BOC, etc?? And those syndicated morning shows blow chunks.

Agreed - unfortunately these butt rock stations have die hard loyal burn-out listeners who dream of the glory years of 1981 and still get pumped when "More Than A Feeling" starts pumping through their speakers.

Seems like a lot of 70's-early 80's rock. Seems the logical evolution is mid 80's-early 90's hard rock.

What is "confusing as hell" is yesterday I heard Terri Ray say 93.5 was switching at midnight to simulcast 97.5; now she says the switch is going to be at 4 PM today.More misinformation?
