I started listening to CHYR (CJSP in Canada's Sun Parlour) when I was about 13 years old.
I thught it was strange for them to have to change frequency to keep broadcasting at night. Now we had WNZK that changed from 680 to 690 at sundown !
I got a Hallicrafters S 38 D for Xmas in 1957 and listened to EVERYTHING ! liked the varietry of music I heard from Canada, Nashville (The R&B on WLAC) Cinci (the BlueGrass on WCKY) the DJs on WBZ, WLS, KYW (the one in Cleveland on 1100) even on KOMA in Oklahoma City !
Those were my glory days, then I discovered the Amateur radio bands and started studying books from the library untiL I passed the FCC exam and started building transmitters and forgot to listen to the BC bands for a while ! !

I think I started to listen to CHYR when they went from 1000 watts to 10000 watts, and came in better in Genesee County than CKLW, and went to a more competitive format. It was one of my strongest "go to" signal stations in the Daytime, besides the locals. I remember hearing it one of the first times they went to 730 at Night, in 1967, I believe, without looking it up. I listened to so many stations that a well known voiceover and local Radio TV announcer said that I was a "problem listener" for program directors.

Is THAT where they got the idea for the 486-SX?

I would have thought that "Y. R. Porter" was a totally made up nom de plume, but his name was Jim Weir, and "Y R" is apparently one pronunciation of Weir.

I remember CHYR 710 blasting into Grand Rapids, MI every day in the '66-'72 era! It was even stronger than WJR's signal, which was pretty decent.

Could never hear the night signal when they'd 'jump' to 730, though.

CFCO on 630 was another 'long haul' to Grand Rapids in daytime with a good strength. They disappeared at night back then but today they come into Grand Rapids pretty fair all the time! Even at night!

CKLW must have been 'protecting' some Wisconsin station because they've always been very weak in Grand Rapids. Readable with a sensitive receiver but weak.

CHYR 710 was a favorite of mine in the late 70's. Excellent daytime signal into Lansing. The nighttime signal on 730 was obviously diminished, but I could pick it up on a good night. WVIC-AM 730 was daytime-only at that point. CHYR's frequency occurred at the same local-sunset time WVIC would sign off.

Shortwave is the ORIGINAL satellite radio.

It was CBQ in Port Arthur (a city that is now known as Thunder Bay. The government created the city of Thunder Bay by "marrying" Port Arthur and Fort William in 1970).

Of course, being Canada, they shut down the AM facility and replaced it with an FM facility.

Privately-owned CKPR also moved from AM to FM.

Also, there still is an 800 in Wisconsin (WDUX, 5kW day and 500W night)

CFCO boosted its night signal from 1kW to 6kW sometime in the late '90s, if I remember correctly. They've had 10kW days for as long as I can remember.

There was also the other "border blaster" station on 800kc: XELO (later XEROK) Ciudad Juarez (El Paso). 150,000 watts back in the day. During their "X-Rock 80" Top 40 days in the late '70s there was talk of CKLW and XEROK simulcasting to create a continent-wide superstation on 800khz. That never panned out and I doubt it would have lasted long anyway given that AM Top 40 was entering its death throes, but it's interesting to think about what might have been.

Trans World Radio also operated a religious 800 on the Caribbean island of Bonaire that gave CKLW listeners trouble during the '60s and '70s. IIRC they operated it like a shortwave station, beaming the signal in different directions depending on whom they wanted to target, and when they beamed it north toward the U.S. it tore the Big 8 to shreds.

They used five of the towers they already had to be a five tower array. Roughly in a line, they designed the pattern as best they could, allowing 6 kW. The station that used to be 630 KDWB temporarily became a Daytime Class D and was no longer protected at Night, so CFCO was able to increase their signal slightly toward it, resulting in a slight increase in their NIF. 630 came back on the air as a Class B in Minnesota as WREY. It has a better pattern than KDWB had. As I recall, KDWB used to have a very directional signal with just 500 watts at Night.

Had CHYR in Toledo on day pattern/freq. Night was weird with WJYM/WMGS Bowling Green, Ohio on 730.
