Why hasn't the disappearance of a 100 kW FM radio station from the airwaves caught the attention of TV 9 & 10 or TV 7 & 4?

If a major signal disappeared in, say, Grand Rapids - the TV news rooms would be all over the story like flies on shit!

This would be the point, we have 24 signals in the area and nobody and I mean nobody cares what that idiot is doing anymore. If you recall he sued the city, and a number of other government organizations before Vanishing under rumors of a mental breakdown.

We didn't hear much about Blarney Stone when they came to town. There was Zero marketing done, I saw a really old Ford SUV driving around that was logoed up one time, that I assume assumed had come over from Grayling

We have podcasts in Traverse City with more listeners than 90% of the radio stations. Why listen to marginal voice tracked crappy playlists when you can stream just about anything on free Citywide internet.

Just because it's a major signal, doesn't mean anyone is listening or paying attention. In most listener's ears, there are four radio stations in Traverse City - the country station (TCM), the pop station (KHQ) the Rock station (KLT) and the easy listening station (Lite in Petoskey for those in the northern areas). Nothing else makes any sort of impact or gets any attention.

Wow, well, have you had your morning coffee yet, TC Talks?

Talking shit about other people, Blarney Stone...and radio in general is supposed to make people feel you are an authority on the subject?

It doesn’t.

If you really detest broadcast radio this much, why even bother with it?

Because what you are currently saying may well belong in the “Douchebag Repository” section of this board.

Say something nice occasionally and not so much about your well-known favorite broadcaster in town. You will look and feel better for it for sure.

Because WLDR had fewer listeners in the Traverse City TV market than a Houghton Lake-based station! (WLDR was slightly ahead of WUPS in the last radio ratings, but WUPS has way more listeners in the portions of the DMA that aren't part of the radio market)

Some of the people seem to have an overinflated view of the importance of the market. The Traverse City Area has far more radio stations than other, much larger, markets in Michigan and the Midwest. This is largely due to the FCC rules which restrict stations where they are needed, and put many stations in the middle of nowhere. There are many other overrated markets, largely due to the way the markets are defined with way far out nearby county regions that barely receive signals from more than one or two market stations. Traverse City also seems larger than it really is due to poor traffic engineering and traffic jams resulting from NIMBY rejection of any nearby expressways.

When the 100kw WYKX Escanaba tower collapsed in 2015, that event received significant TV and print media coverage in the central Upper Peninsula.

It would be immediately noticed by legions of listeners--and big news--if WTCM-FM was taken off the air. But WLDR? It's hard to stay in the public awareness--let alone maintain an audience--when the station is off the air so frequently.

Little wonder there are Account Executive positions open on a seemingly perpetual basis at Blarney Stone. How can you sell WLDR if it can't stay on the air?

Sorry Cap'n all this does is take me to some site to track my podcast. I have found out that "Radio Sucks Explains How to Help Your Romance Grow" hasn't caught on yet with podcast listeners, I'm sorry to report.

how long have you been in the business? I'd be happy to compare resumes, does yours include WGN?

There are three legitimate broadcasters in the city, I don't understand how the rest of them make it. Interlochen Public Radio, the third most listened to radio group in the region is one of the best public radio stations per capita in the nation. Another local public station has thousands of internet listeners.

Some of these radio groups just simply are bad businesses.

Given up on that, working on a weekly fax newsletter column on digital marketing. But to get back to the subject, would love to know which TC or Northern Michigan podcasts have 100,000 listeners...
