A thought on how to beat Trump

Post by Circle Seven » Sat Aug 31, 2019 8:25 pm

I've been pondering what course of action the eventual Democratic candidate should take.
Whoever gets the nod is going to have all of Clinton's 2016 votes in their pocket, basically no matter what he or she says.

So I've been thinking, why not swim towards the other side a little bit with policy?
Trump's base is a whole lot of retirees. Why not say "If I'm elected, I'll lift the tax on pensions".
Say things that would appease the gun lovers a little bit. Me personally I think most gun owners don't hike 4 days and shoot an elk at a quarter mile.
Say something like "I support the Second Amendment but we got to get high powered semi-automatic weapons out of peoples hands."
And figure out just why so many union members are all in with Trump. Identify just what is it they want to hear, and say it.
These are just examples, but you get the idea.

ABC may throw a fit, and liberal leaders and some liberal voters will grumble. But I don't think you'll lose them, so why not bend a bit and go after the low hanging fruit on the other side.

Your thoughts on me playing amateur political advisor?

Does policy win elections anymore? In this very divided America today, how does "the other side" basically promise the same policies as the incumbent, "just not quite as severe."

What about truly being the Anti-Trump - humble, honest, kind, complimentary, caring, professional.

"My plan is to hire a lot of people smarter than me and be fully transparent in all government dealings."

"To be honest, I'm the least important person in this mix. We need qualified people at all levels of government to be proper guardians of your safety and your money."

"I realize that over XX% of the voters in America won't vote for me. I'm still required to listen and be the president for all those people as well."

"Every single member of Congress was voted in by the folks in their district. I don't have to agree with them and will work hard to stop the policies and plans they are supporting if I feel it's best for the country. But they all deserve my respect and attention, and I will treat them courteously."

"There will be a lot of times when both sides of an issue are not totally pleased with my decision. That is the first indication that it's fair and probably the best one."

"We have a Constitution. The House of Representatives writes the checks, the Senate checks their math and my job is to either sign the check or tear it up. For years, we've all been doing that in a vacuum, with little to no consultation before or during the process. Why not all get together in advance and work out a roadmap before everyone gets caught up in the details?"

"As my dad/uncle/someone said.. there are three sides to every story - my side, your side and the truth. Let's work together to find that truth and the best answer to every question that is asked of our government."

It shouldn't be hard to beat him, but all the current slate of candidates have already presented themselves as socialist radicals - open borders, reparations, Medicare-for-all, etc and wouldn't be able to step back from that.

The Democrats wouldn't support someone who doesn't adhere to those beliefs either, so it'd have to be a third party candidate, which is where you lose the 25% right off the bat.

Why vote for the pretend Trump, when they already have the real thing?

I started out with nothing and I still have most of it.

Trump should propose to ban cell phones.

I read an appreciate all the replies.
Like I said, no matter what the 2020 Democratic nominee says, he or she isn't going to lose the votes Clinton got in 2016.
So why not like I said, go for the "low hanging fruit" on the other side? Tell Trumps fan base some stuff they want to hear.

I really like the "no more taxes on pensions" idea. Which were the surprise swing states for him? Rust belt states full of old folks on pensions. When the curmudgeons realize such a promise would equate to cold hard cash in their pocket, I think it could bring enough over to tip the balance.

And TurkeyTop, in no way would I expect them to keep any promises they made. What politician has ever done that?
Trump got elected on "Dazzle and Baffle" BS. So do the same exact thing he did. Say whatever it takes to get elected. Then forget about it.
