WPON testing again ?

The technical side of broadcasting. Think IBOC is a sham? Talk about it here! How about HDTV? Post DX reports here as well.

WPON testing again ?

Post by k8jd » Tue Aug 13, 2019 5:13 pm

Tuning the AMBC frequencies and heard Motown oldies on 1460 kHz again, very strong signal and good modulation BUT it keeps going off and coming back on the air, TESTING ?

IMHO, I'm surprised WPON didn't have its license cancelled years ago

I have never picked up 1460 since they went off nearly 10 years ago, but then again Canton isn’t really in the main coverage area.

I will have to try again tomorrow.

They are testing today. Fairly weak south of Plymouth. Not sure about other directions.

I am shocked they are actually putting something on this signal.

Kind of related, as they are on the same towers:

This afternoon, I heard what surely must have been WCXI 1160 fairly strong in Mexicantown, not booming, but easy to hear. Two old men talking about 1950s cars and 1950s music. They also sounded like they were overmodulated.
Also heard Motown music on 1460, quite weak.
THIS IS HISTORY- the first AM duplex in the Detroit market.

Hawaii has many shared AMBC antennas, for several stations in some cases, all the AM stations in Honolulu are single tower. You find this where real estate is really pricey !

Late Report !

I went to 1460 and 1160 for a listen this evenng at around 00:15 UT, sounds like WCXI is still on the Fenton towers and WPON seems to be off the air again, just a jumble of mixed signals there, not much signal strength on either freq., certainly not from the new towers just a few miles from here !
By-the-Way......
I saw the new WPON towers finally ! My daughter -in-law was taking us to Kensington Park for a picnic with the grandkids, Taking back roads ! When we passed the intersection of Buno Road and King Ranch Rd, the towers appeared above the tree line for a few seconds !

Agreed.

I think WCXI is back to full power from their licensed Fenton site.

CXI in the daytime can be heard across much of Metro Detroit with a decent car radio.

CXI is in Fenton again? I haven’t checked lately, but their 1000 watt signal was poor in Western Wayne back then. It had been much better lately, leading me to assume it was coming from Milford Twp.

I was in Northville yesterday- no peep from WPON.

I may have been mistaken, fuzzpower.

Looks like WCXI is broadcasting with 250 watts non-directional from Milford Twp. under STA.

I asked about WPON. They plan on having it up and running for good by next month. Consider this is Sima, take it for a grain of salt. When they are testing, it is not full power, which explains why reception was so poor south of Plymouth. The maps I have seen should bring a listenable signal well into Canton and Romulus if they did run at the full 600 something watts.

WCXI 1160 has never yet stopped the scan in either of my cars. I've been over by Livernois and Square Lake and it still didn't stop it. Thats about 22 miles from the site. I've been closer but only at Night when it was buried in interference from WYLL.

The Fenton site's main lobe was kidney-bean shaped to the east. I haven't been in that building since probably 1991 or so. Can't say what shape any of it is in now, but judging by the ownership, it's probably tanked.

All I know is that running 250 watts nondirectional or whatever from the CP site sure isn't an improvement, and in many areas the Licensed Fenton site is stronger when at 1 kW full power and proper DA parameters. It will be interesting, if they file a proof of performance of the 15 kW CP DA, to see what the radial conductivities are and the real service contours. The "Colonel" once told us that Harold Munn told WPON not to license the Benstein Loon Lake facility because it was so bad. Presumably, some dual use of the buildings at the Square Lake Telegraph site could have been used, at least for the nondirectional 1 kW (0.75 kW reduced input minimum efficiency) Day facility (KEIB uses such a dual use site). This CP site is 3 miles West of Benstein Loon Lake, and there is no reason to believe the CP site is any better, if as good. In the good old AM days, WCXI would have just filed for an increase to 50 kW Daytime in such a case, but that is economically unfeasible today because of power costs.
