Townsquare Translators Rochester, MN

Unread post by CK-722 »

Townsquare has 3 collocated translators multiplexed into a three bay crossed V Bext antenna at the Townsquare Studios in central Rochester, MN. One carries their AM station on 1340, KROC, on 96.9. A second one on 104.9 fills in KYBA, a 50 kW rimshot FM 30 miles away. The third repeats KROC-FM, a 100 kW Longley Rice predicted 70 dBu rimshot, on 106.5.

It seems like Townsquare should have pursued fill in translators for WFNT 1470 and WWBN 101.5 at least. A translator at the Studio could cover the growing Grand Blanc-Mundy-Fenton area on the back of the WFNT AM DA pattern. A location somewhat further North could be within the WWBN 60 dBu contour as required.
Is THAT where they got the idea for the 486-SX?

Surprisingly, it looks like the call letters have been there since the AM signed on, and no one bought a call letter swap.

FM TL has always been way out where the 3.16 mV/m didn't reach all of COL at least under current borders and curves.

Was the translator bumped from another frequency?

That's the way KROC identified. The legal was always "KROC 107 and 104 Rochester." May have to make a few calls on that and report back.

Looks like they dropped in 103.9 to Eyota, MN, and they had to move. Wonder what the boundaries were when KROC-FM was authorized. Looks like they are on a TV transmiting tower.

Comparing the ratings and presumptive effect of translators for KROC AM 1340 vs. WFNT AM 1470, both Townsquare properties. Although the syndicated programming is similar to identical, most of the same shows being split between two or three AMs owned by Townsquare and Cumulus, and others, KROC AM has much higher ratings than WFNT AM.

KROC, with a translator, has a 3.9 rating in the latest book.

WFNT, with no translator, has a 0.2 rating in the latest book.

You might argue that the markets cannot be compared because the demographics are different. However, if a WFNT translator covered the Grand Blanc-Mundy-Fenton area, where a lot of more affluent and similar demographics exist, a whole market within a market would be better served, which is not reached that well by WFNT. I believe that a dramatic increase in ratings would occur.
