Looks like they got a new translator too. 93.1 already has sports covered. what's next?

If you don't subscribe to Lance (which is understandable), he bandied the word "Legendary" in what is now clearly a paywall tease for 940 WCIT.

And "Legendary" brings up in my mind a possible flanker for WFGF.

There's a big format hole for urban in Lima, definitely. Funny thing is that 940 had an urban format early on under Forever ownership... prior to their first stint with sports (which wound up moving to 93.1).

NW Ohio does not need anymore country whatsoever. Right, I remember them airing Urban. I believe 104.9 did a stint with Urban too. It's a very underserved demographic.

I don't know any music station, who is in their right mind, that will be willing to put a music format on a dying AM radio station. Most stereos oh, clock radios, cell phones, and even boom boxes, do not carry AM radio. It would be foolish to put a station on a this music. The Fidelity is terrible, in the first place. Plus the range of a 250 watt AM station would not cover very far. And around that frequency and a little further up, there is a lot of interference and Noise issues. It would be suicide to put music on 940 am.

Its happening a lot with AMs with translators. It will work in smaller markets. In Grand Rapids, WNWZ 1410 has a translator on 104.9 and is doing quite well in the ratings with an R & B format.

100 watts or less, usually.

98.5 W253CM is licensed for the max of 250 watts. From coverage maps, it should easily cover the immediate Lima area.

I kinda figured it was a powerful one. So if they do put music on there, it should be workable. IMO they should do Urban.

A centrally located 250 watt translator can have a stronger signal for a few miles than outlying TL Class Bs and "rim-shots". The R & B/Urban listening population does tend to be concentrated in those 70 dBu covered areas. It helps in markets like Grand Rapids, who have long ignored that demographic. If you already have a full power Class A, centrally located, like a 80-90 Drop In, doing that format, the translator won't work nearly as well. I think a MeTV FM type format on an AM/FM Translator combo, that might work well also.

For a small market like Lima, the max power of 250 watts for FM translators is the norm.

And the FM translator is what 99.999999999999% of the audience will be listening to. 940 will be an outright afterthought outside of the power bill. Not only can they program it with music, Wolf Boom now has another de facto FM signal that they will sell to advertisers with the rest of the cluster.

But ya know, "AM Revitalization" blah blah blah.

I used to listen to WCIT back in the late 70s and early 80s. It was Top 40 and a joke. WCIT was a daytimer with no pre-or post sunrise authority. I believe they had a horrible automation system, and was almost laughable. The FM was beautiful music. The owner thought he was a big-shot, and was clueless. I don't recall the gentleman's name. He owned the station for years. They had a beautiful building and studios, but they were mostly wasted by the on-air product. Does anybody know what happened to that old owner? And, what happened along the way? P.S., I worked locally in radio at the time. However, I live elsewhere, now, and don't know the local situation.

250 watts and 6 watts at night, not much you can do with it. Seems like nothing has lasted. Urban, Oldies, News/talk, Sports, etc... . With CInw gone, could 940 increase there power now? They likely won't.
