Discussion pertaining to Detroit, Ann Arbor, Port Huron, and SW Ontario
It was an O&O until 1984, not sure how ABC News used the property or local news department for covering national stories in the midwest. CBS News rented space at Broadcast house in the early 2000's for one of it's bureaus for a few years.
I was there as an employee when they were an O&O. There was never a network news bureau to my knowledge within Broadcast House. ABC would come into town if there was a major story independent of our operation. We did originate World News Tonight once as I did audio for that in one of our control rooms. Peter Jennings was in the studio but the news footage for stories was rolled in New York. If I remember correctly they (ABC) used one of their directors to direct that broadcast with us in our control room.
As an unrelated aside when ABC used to broadcast the Olympics they would purchase all new equipment to cover it and then afterwards distribute the new equipment to its owned and operated stations. I can remember we got new studio cameras in one of those deals.
On a related note, an ABC Radio Network Newscast morning report, originating from Broadcast House, exists on YouTube. It aired during 1967 Detroit riots. It's an on-air piece recorded off of WXYZ Radio, also an ABC O&O. It features long-time WXYZ talent.
