Deep Cuts From More Contemporary Artists

Post by Mega Hertz » Sun May 12, 2019 12:55 pm

The classic rock deep cuts are awesome, and I'm loving it. But, as someone that's 34 years old, I also love rock from the 90s and beyond. There are a lot of newer (so to speak) that I'd love to hear deep cuts from. If you can think of any, by all means, drop them here!

For example:

Green Day - "Hitchin' a Ride" or "Armatage Shanks"
Red Hot Chili Peppers - "Warped" or "Knock Me Down"
Sublime - "April 29, 1992" or "Caress Me Down"
Tool - "Prison Sex"
Stabbing Westward - "What Do I Have to Do?"
Fuel - "Shimmer"
Social Distortion - "I Was Wrong"

All of those songs received decent amounts of airplay upon release on Modern Rock, AOR and Active Rock formats, but much like the other deep cuts, just fell by the wayside after so long.

I'm sure Zenith and MW will have some good choices here!

Yes on both accounts. Because I remember when these weren't deep cuts.

I think it gets harder to have deep cuts once the CD format took over. You no longer had singles released with a B-Side, hell you didn't even really have a flipside of a record or tape anymore. Also 90's is when big media conglomerates start buying multiple stations in a market, and tightly controlled corporate playlist really started taking over the airwaves. I got off the mainstream rock bus once Grunge, Nu Metal, and Emo took over in the 90's, I look at the track listed and don't even remember the songs, or even most of the bands. The bands and songs I have from the 90's are not really mainstream radio hits.

It's not so much as b-sides as it is songs that used to get played, but don't anymore. For example, a band like Green Day that was H*** in the 90s, has had their songs whittled down to the hits from Dookie, Brain Stew and American Idiot. They had numerous hits, many of which don't get played anymore. Same with Sponge. They were big for a while too, and you rarely, if ever, hear them anymore. Molly (Sixteen Candles) was everywhere in 1995. And now I hear none!

The less Green Day, the better. I didn’t like them 25 years ago, and I still don’t. Whiny vocals.

"Devil's Diary" - The Caufields
"It's a Shame About Ray" - The Lemonheads
"Surfin' On Jupiter" - Psychefunkapus
"Another Chance" - The Georgia Satellites
"Mariposa" - Seed (an epic song that is hard to find
https://youtu.be/l6M15Hf994Y)
"Monopoly On Sorrow" and "I'll Hate You Better" - Suicidal Tendencies
"Goodbye Innocence" - L.E.O.
"Very Best Years" - The Grays
"Younger Face" - Dan Baird
"The Last" - The Replacements
"Lady Your Roof Brings Me Down" - Scott Weiland
any of a number of S.T.P. songs, but I'll toss "Big Bang Baby" and "Sour Girl" out there. The latter is featured in a Letterman show video on YouTube that has Junior Brown guesting with his Guit-Steel guitar.

Another issue I have with more contemporary rock artist I have no idea what classifies as a 90's classic rock song.

If WLLZ is going to play Beastie Boys replace the License to Ill stuff with their 90s tracks "Sabotage" and "Intergalactic"

Jane's Addiction "Jane Says" and "Been Caught Stealing"
Red Hot Chili Peppers "Fight Like a Brave"
Rage Against the Machine "Killing in the Name"
Nine Inch Nails 'Pretty Hate Machine" "Closer"
The Prodigy "Smack My Bitch Up" "Firestarter"
Ministry "Thieves" "Jesus Built My Hotrod"
Front 242 "Headhunter"
KMFDM "Naive" "Juke Joint Jezebel"
Matthew Sweet "Girlfriend"
Joe Satriani "Surfing with the Alien" "All Alone"
Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet "Having an Average Weekend"

I listened to 93.9s "retro lunch" and heard Kate Bush's "Running Up That Hill" and the Eels "Novocaine For The Soul", 2 songs I havent heard in a long long time.
Might not be quite the same genre but there are actual deep cuts played on local radio.

I think "Running Up That Hill" is Kate Bush's only US mainstream radio hit. I know she charted a lot in the UK, but only ever got played in the US on college and alt format stations.
