WKZO nighttime signal

Post by MWmetalhead » Sun Apr 14, 2019 9:13 am

So, did 590 in Kalamazoo ever restore its nighttime directional pattern, or are they still operating with ~ 1 kW omni?

I'll have to research that. The last I heard, there was a new, guyed fourth tower that was up as I recall. WTVN seems to be taking their sweet time fixing their's too. Some of it might be that many stations like being 1 kW nondirectional Nights with no nulls, because their nulls all tend to be in now heavily developed suburban areas. And many central cities are aging and decrepit and don't have many of the aging demo that listens anymore.

Is THAT where they got the idea for the 486-SX?

An odd fact about WKZO's DA is that WOW 590 Omaha demanded that WKZO stay DA until 10 AM during morning drive critical hours until the 1960s or 1970s as I recall. Well, OK, no problem, the nulls weren't populated then, and the H*** major lobe to the North served Grand Rapids much better than nondirectional, like more than twice the field strength, and very little skywave interference from WOW usually during late mornings. So they had a de facto duopoly with WJEF, also owned by John Fetzer.

Being in one of the nighttime nulls and trying to listen to the tigers on 590, I can confirm that they are back on the directional.

Looking at some other applications, the WKZO NIF is 7.5 mV/m. The biggest interference contreibutors to the NIF are KXSP (WOW) Omaha and KFNS (WRTH) Wood River. Does that make KFNS a K Callsign station in Illinois? So both contributors are or were callsign exceptions. WOW was grandfathered, and KFNS was coowned with KFNS-FM Troy, MO. KFNS is licensed to Wood River, IL and also its transmitter is in Illinois.

I always wondered how WKZO was considered a Class III-A with that high of an NIF from just WOW. The late Charlie Gustafson told me that they measured the skywave and it was less. Remember that Fetzer was also allowed 500000 watts on WJFM.
