*KLT and Rock 105 are neck-and-neck
*Trish chickened out
*The Fox, ESPN and The Bear's ratings are a joke
*WLDR at a .9... Really?
*I guess Q100 does OK with not the best signal up north
*no ratings for the religious stations
*and of course, WTCM-FM is still #1, even without O'Malley

Re: Fall 18 Nielsens
Remember all the clowns years ago who said Active Rock would never fly in Northern Michigan?
A 6.0 share! A fucking 6.0 share!
I realize 106KHQ isn't a subscriber, and therefore isn't listed. Let's assume for a second they had an unusually good book. Worst case scenario - Rock 105 / 95.5 is ranked #4 overall. Quite possibly, they are #3 overall.
KLT 97.5 & 98.9 still is in the lead in the rock battle, but the margin has certainly narrowed. Rock 105 & 95.5 is within spitting distance now.
103.5 WTCM-FM is #1 by a mile, as usual.
Fox FM - 2.3 share
98.1 The Bear - 1.7 share (ouch).
ESPN Radio - 1.5 share
WLDR - super ouch x 1000. Holy shit. Blarney Stone has managed to make the ratings WORSE. I mean, they lost to ESPN Radio for cryin' out loud. Wouldn't surprise me if they lost to 96.7 The Bull, too.
How is it that Lite 96 does so well and 101.9 WLDR does so poorly ?!?!
Perhaps WLDR needs to consider returning to a Country format. I think an 80's, 90's & early 2K's based Classic Country format would be great.

Re: Fall 18 Nielsens
Wonder what WGFE (95.5) would be if it was included on the ratings. Since most simulcast have separate ratings for each station. Would bring up real rock higher in the ratings.
Re: Fall 18 Nielsens
Does WLDR have any local programming now or is it still all WW1? Also, if I'm not mistaken, wasn't WLDR operating at greatly reduced power for much of that period?
I'd love a "Duke" type format in northern Michigan. Unless you're within listening range of WBMI, WGDN-FM or WCBY, the only place to hear "real" country music up north is WTCM (or WATZ) on Saturday nights.

Re: Fall 18 Nielsens
WICA's 3.2 share is impressive considering they have no signal in Cadillac and iffy signals in Gaylord and Manistee (WLMN gets wiped out quite a bit by the 89.7 in Sister Bay, WI).
It would be interesting to see how many counties WTCM-FM is #1 among terrestrial radio stations. My best guess would be around 10.
It would also be interesting to see the order of stations in the following areas (some of the counties included aren't in the market):
Traverse City (Antrim, Benzie, Grand Traverse, Kalkaska, Leelanau)
Petoskey/Gaylord (Charlevoix, Cheboygan, Emmet, Otsego)
Cadillac/Manistee/Ludington (Lake, Manistee, Mason, Missaukee, Osceola, Wexford)

105.1 and 95.5 are listed together; the 6.0 share encompasses both stations
WLDR has two or three local dayparts, including morning drive.

I still think KLT is dated and too stale. How much can you hear Kansas, Blue Oyster Cult, Rush, Foreigner, etc.... Nothing against those bands but geez!

Re: Fall 18 Nielsens
A lot of people agree - hence Rock 105/95.5's strong performance.
The heart of the market has a lack of Country options. Cadillac has it good. The tip 'o the mitt has it really good. Most everywhere else has only one or two Country stations that can be picked up easily indoors.
As Sage and other folks have mentioned here in the past, workplace listening in & around Traverse City is to formats other than Adult Contemporary.
How many more times does the format in all of its various flavors need to FAIL there? 92.9 The Breeze - fail. WSRT 106.7/105.5 - fail. Easy 95.5 - fail. 101.9 WLDR - failure imminent.
A traditional country format would be perfect for 101.9. Hell, the teased-but-never-implemented "Trail" format that Blarney Stone pitched for 92.5/94.3 might even be a decent replacement.

Re: Fall 18 Nielsens
I really would like to see a DUKE FM in northern Michigan for sure. A nice alternative to WTCM. I think there are a lot of fans of 90's and 80's country. The new stuff is just garbage.

Re: Fall 18 Nielsens
I think the real story is still Omelette. The last book with Omelette at KLT had him as the #1 morning show and KLT was the number one station. KLT’s numbers have been slipping but most of the hemorrhaging is coming in the morning. The Bears numbers are not good but Omelette is clearly outperforming the rest of the station. So by letting go of Omelette KLT allowed WTCM to move into the solid #1 position and Real Rock is now nipping at their heels.
Re: Fall 18 Nielsens
I guess we understand why Finster is gone. WICA is 6kW and the northern signal isn't very strong.
I think WLDR could benefit from something, but they would have no chance selling country. Remember: no national buys, sales are 90% local, so it's more than just numbers.

Re: Fall 18 Nielsens
If they sold spots for one-half the price of WTCM-FM, I bet they'd find a decent number of advertisers and would probably generate more cash flow than the current format.
Again, don't duplicate TCM-FM's playlist. Instead, program something that sounds closer to Big Country Gold or Duke-FM. That's the key to success.
Frankly, if they are going to stick with AC, it might make sense to bring back the Sunny 102 branding. I'd use one of the jingle packages the station used in the 90's or early 2K's. The point would to conjure up listeners' memories of the station when it was still relevant (and I presume relatively successful) as an Adult Contemporary outlet, and to make them think the "old" Sunny 102 that they know & loved is back.

Re: Fall 18 Nielsens
It's probably the best signal in Traverse City but it is been bastardized for so long going to be a long hard climb back. They aren't going to win any favor by being 100% Satellite. Did you see how many stations were listed?
Dare I say the cost to restore the brand might not be worth it,

Re: Fall 18 Nielsens
You raise valid points. Cannot disagree.
I wonder if Blarney Stone has even done any meaningful market research. Hopefully they understand Traverse City is a much different market than Gaylord & Grayling (if one can even call that a "market" per se).
The station looks to be running local programming weekdays from 6a to 6p. I'm guessing weekends are 100% off the bird or automated. You're right; the station needs a lot more local flavor to have a shot of making any meaningful impact.

The best thing for 101.9, IMHO, would be for IPR to buy it and move IPR News to 101.9, spinning off 91.5 to a religious broadcaster (i.e. The Promise FM, which just bought 100.9 East Jordan from IPR)TC Talks wrote: ↑Tue Feb 05, 2019 8:42 pmIt's probably the best signal in Traverse City but it is been bastardized for so long going to be a long hard climb back.
