How's this for a misheard (and mondo controversial) lyric:In the summer of '67,around the time of the riot,Bob Seger's "Heavy Music" hit the airwaves .
The lyrics in question were "I know you're gonna dig it,I know you can't stop," which many (including your favourite Canadian lad here ) thought was "I know you've got a n****r," I know you can't stop." Despite this potentially racially-charged mishearing,plenty of blacks on both sides of the border (again,including Yours Truly) called CKLW,Keener 13 and other stations to request "Heavy Music."

"Here we are now, entertainers ... " (correct is "Here we are, now entertain us." Moving the comma makes a difference.)

"Johnny B. Goode:"

" ... where stood a long cabin made of virgin wood ... " (correct is "earth and wood").

"Caldonia" -- not from the Louis Jordan original, but from the one that was on the radio around 1961: "Caldonia! Caldonia! What makes your big head so hard? Rocks!" (The correct word varies depending on the recording, but it isn't "rocks." It made sense at the time, though.)

Chuck Berry (who died two years ago yesterday at ninety) originally wrote " Where lives a coloured boy named Johnny B. Goode " ( "coloured boy" being a polite way of referring to men of African heritage three generations back ,when Berry penned his signature song ) ,but Berry,who knew most non-black-oriented radio stations were reluctant to play works by African-American artists and almost certainly wouldn't have played a song with an African-American hero, changed the lyric to "Where lives a COUNTRY boy named Johnny B. Goode" so his standard would be airable in the mind of the bigoted PDs of the mid-fifties .

That said, I don't think anyone knows the lyrics to "blue"... my female cousins always sang it as "I'm blue, I'm in need of a guy"
