When Billy Idol sang "Eyes without a face," I thought at first he was singing, "How's about a baby?"

The Police "Wrapped Around Your Finger" (1983) RIGHT lyric: "I will turn your face to alabaster" WRONG lyric: "I will turn your face to every bastard".

Herman's Hermits, "Must To Avoid:"

"She's a must to a boy ..... "

And I remember hearing Dick Biondi on WCFL mention the same incorrect lyric and quote the correct one. So many others no doubt heard the same thing.

Well,if she's a buxom blonde,she'd be a must to THIS boy.
How's this for a misheard (and mondo controversial) lyric:In the summer of '67,around the time of the riot,Bob Seger's "Heavy Music" hit the airwaves .
The lyrics in question were "I know you're gonna dig it,I know you can't stop," which many (including your favourite Canadian lad here ) thought was "I know you've got a n****r," I know you can't stop." Despite this potentially racially-charged mishearing, plenty of blacks on both sides of the border (again, including Yours Truly) called CKLW,Keener 13 and other stations to request "Heavy Music."

Heart "Straight On" (1978) RIGHT lyric: "Got the feel of fortune, deal me in" WRONG lyric: "Feelin' funky, feel the end"

"Seventh Son:"

"Heal the sick, raise the dead, and make a little dust talk out of their head ... " (correct is "make the little girls talk out of their heads," but all of us who knew the song from the Johnny Rivers chart version sang the same incorrect lyric).

Nirvana, "Smells Like Teen Spirit:"

"Here we are now, entertainers ... " (correct is "Here we are, now entertain us." Moving the comma makes a difference.)

"Johnny B. Goode:"

" ... where stood a long cabin made of virgin wood ... " (correct is "earth and wood").

"Caldonia" -- not from the Louis Jordan original, but from the one that was on the radio around 1961: "Caldonia! Caldonia! What makes your big head so hard? Rocks!" (The correct word varies depending on the recording, but it isn't "rocks." It made sense at the time, though.)

Oh say can you see,
by The Donzerly Light -

When I was in first grade I thought the words were as I’ve written above.
Only when I saw the lyrics to The Star Spangled Banner written in a song book did I realize there was not some big bright man made illumination called The Donzerly Light.

he he. Kids!

Yeah, but thank goodness Colin Kaepernick didn't care if "The Star Spangled Banner's" lyrics were correctly or incorrectly heard.

The Pretenders "Brass In Pocket:"

" ... gonna use my fingers . . . gonna use my, my, my, vagination ... " "I've been driving, deeper leaning . . . " (correct, meaning known only to Ms. Hynde, is "Detroit leaning"). Only two examples; most of its lyrics were a mystery until I searched them.

Naked Eyes "Promises Promises:"

"Never had a doubt in the beginning, never ate out ... "

Kenny Loggins "I'm All Right:"

"Emma-line, don't nobody worry 'bout me ... "

Nirvana "Come As You Are:"

"amarilla . . . amarilla . . . " (Spanish for "yellow," correct is "memoria").

The Silhouettes "Get A Job:"

" . . . I go back to the house, hear that woman's mouth, bitchin and a cryin, tell me that I'm lyin 'bout a jooooob . . . " (correct is "preachin and a cryin" but I still like my lyrics better).

The late Dobie Gray "Drift Away" (1973) RIGHT lyric: "Give me the beat boys and free my soul" WRONG lyric: "Give me The Beach Boys and free my soul" Even Rod Stewart's remake from 1975 "Atlantic Crossing" sang "Give me the beat boys and soothe my soul"

Chuck Berry (who died two years ago yesterday at ninety) originally wrote " Where lives a coloured boy named Johnny B. Goode " ( "coloured boy" being a polite way of referring to men of African heritage three generations back ,when Berry penned his signature song ) ,but Berry, who knew most non-black-oriented radio stations were reluctant to play works by African-American artists and almost certainly wouldn't have played a song with an African-American hero, changed the lyric to "Where lives a COUNTRY boy named Johnny B. Goode" so his standard would be airable in the mind of the bigoted PDs of the mid-fifties .

And how stoned or drunk were we all to hear some of those lyrics they way we did? lol

That said, I don't think anyone knows the lyrics to "blue"... my female cousins always sang it as "I'm blue, I'm in need of a guy"
