Toledo radio Predictions for 2019

Post by Deleted User 10525 » Thu Nov 29, 2018 9:30 pm

Well, nothing ever much seems to happen in T-town but I'll go for these.

1. Family radio and EMF trade signals, K-love classics goes to 90.3 and FR goes to 1520am. 90.3 becomes WPAY and 1520 WOTL

2. 106.5 Is Donated to Annunciation radio. The WTOD calls move to Minneapolis or to a AMer someplace. Could also be sold to Bot radio Network or Family life radio.

3. 100.7fm shifts to sports displacing talk radio, as format moves from 106.5. They either keep ESPN or get CBS sports radio. It retains The Ticket name . Brokered Sunday programming stays .

4. Urban radio purchases 107.7fm, it flips to a Gospel/praise format. Calls remain WPFX

5. 1370/92.9 drops local afternoon show for Sean Hannity(live).

The afternoon drive time show is the only program I listen to on WSPD, Scott makes it a fairly fun show, even playing music - love it.

Very long shot: WMTR buys 106.5 and keeps the sports format (with both 96.1 and 106.5 airing Los Tigres)

I predict a shit ton of changes in morning drive on-air personnel at not one, not two, not three, but four (!!!) Cumulus FM stations around town. :)

Not only that - but ALL of the changes will actually make sense!

I think Denny is a much better fit for WRQN than Star 105.5 (or whatever the fuck that station is called these days).

Moving Pyke to mornings at XKR makes a lot of sense, too.

A transition at K100 - as opposed to an abrupt change - is a good way to go.

Denny got his career started at 93.5, when they were 93Q I believe. His audience that listened to him on Kiss FM back in the 90s, is now listening to 93.5. I had thought for awhile that Denny might slide over down the dial to WRQN.

105.5, Q105.5

Schaffer worked at WRQN in the early/mid 80s. It was not 93Q, but was 93 1/2 at the time. Steve Mason was Schaffer’s co-host.

Based on their Facebook comments from listeners, Denny and Co have an uphill battle to gain acceptance from the WRQN audience.

https://www.facebook.com/935WRQN/

Some examples...

“Dino Tyner So you build up 93.5 to where it is and lower 105.5 to a laughing stock and now you decide to bring Denny to 93.5 to destroy what has been built up. Just sad that you all are creating spot for a hack that has ruined 105.5.”

“Lori Ann Nonnemaker They are going to be on the morning show??? If so that's going to suck”

I also enjoyed Denny’s listener comments. This is gonna be fun to watch and listen to.

I didn't know Denny was with Steve Mason at one point, they became 93Q around 1987 or so I think. I think it was Mason and Pam, then of course with Diane.

It actually makes sense, despite Andy Stuart's presence. Denny's gang on Q1055 was too expensive for their meager share when they have double the share to work with at 93.5FM. Also, Bill Manders hired Cliff Smithers to do country, so it was stupid having him on 93.5 when he belongs on K-100, and will be there once again. Taking a 104 alumnus and putting them on the Q105 morning show is a decent move as well. Only disappointment would be Mark Benson retiring from the mornings on XKR, but as long as they keep Grizzly around, that would be great. BTW, Andy didn't get the job for Cumulus Detroit, so he's stuck down here in NW OH for a while.

105 is always the station stuck in the lower middle, never totally tanks but never really gets ahead.

I’ll buck most conventional wisdom and say that 106.5 will remain in the divestiture trust through all of 2019.

If you look at the Last Bastion Station Trust or all of the trusts iHeart has set up, they can last indefinitely... in the case of Last Bastion, 12 years and counting.

As for replacing Scott Sands with Hannity... Hannity’s got his own problems heading into the coming year, mostly extraneous from radio proper, but Cumulus is also making a gamble pitting Ben Shapiro against him.

I have no need for Boring McGraphics, tyvm

The Hannity thing I mention, as I could see them doing it.

106.5- The Cloud shut down one of there stations in Missouri, to avoid having to try to sell. That leaves 3 left in the trust. As mentioned, the best thing might be to donate the station, unless there willing to part with it on the cheap.

Urban LLC is in the process of spinning off there stations in Muscle Sholes AL, which they owned 4 there. That leaves them with 2 in Toledo and 3 in Mississippi. Once the deal closes in AL, who knows? maybe there looking to make a purchase in Toledo.
