New Music for Old Folks

Post by Bobbert » Thu Dec 06, 2018 10:12 pm

I graduated from high school in 1977, but I've been able to appreciate some current music, thanks to restaurant radio, Amazon Prime, and Saturday Night Live.

My 2000s playlist on Amazon Prime includes these artists:

Colby Caillat (Coco album)
Katy Perry (a few singles and several album cuts, including the great "Wide Awake")
Lana Del Rey (Born to Die album) Sure, her pictures got my attention first, but the music's also interesting.
Kelly Clarkson (mostly the Breakaway album, the first album I ever downloaded)
Train (Drops of Jupiter album)
Michelle Branch (everything she ever recorded—my favorite new artist of this century)
Sara Bareilles (Little Voice album with "Love Song")
Taylor Swift (a few pre-Shake It Up songs)
Pink (a few songs, including the amazing "Who Knew")
Martina McBride (Reckless album)
Regina Spektor (that strange, fascinating "Fidelity" song)
Avril Lavigne ("Complicated")

And last but not least...

Paul McCartney (the New album, an amazing album that sounds as modern as anything else on this list)

Old folks — Anyone have a lot of favorite 2000s music?
Young folks — What else would you recommend to me?

Sounds like a lot of what Radio Disney played.

I always thought Beck was one of the best of the newer artists, but he's been around for more than 20 years already.
Christina Agulara is the real deal... and she's been around for 20 years...
I agree with the new Paul McCartney album, it sounds so current ..Sir Paul's still got it.

We're experiencing a disconnect between the reference to Paul McCartney's "New" album from 2013, and what I assume is a reference to his new album, "Egypt Station", from 2018.

So, his old album is his "New" album, and his new album isn't "New".

I'll cede the discussion to Messrs. Abbott & Costello at this time.

Alice In Chains (The new album Rainer Fog is really good.)
Rival Sons
Royal Blood
Highly Suspect
Seether
In Flames
Some of Five Finger Death Punch
Weezer
Chevelle
God Smack
Rage Against The Machine
Prophets of Rage
White Strips
Jack White
Pop Evil
Wolf Mother
Hailstorm
Rob Zombie
Foo Fighters
Three Days Grace

The list could go on but, I'm going to stop there.
I realize that some of this is a little too heavy for a lot of us so called "Old Folks". :lol

48 yo geezer here. Like music of any age, there's good new stuff and awful new stuff. I like everything from Shawn Mendes and Drake to Greta Van Fleet, Chris Stapleton and Clavin Harris.

59-year-old geezer here. I stopped paying attention to music after leaving radio. So anything after 1998? Except Ariana Grande :horns (Is that a "dirty old man" emoji?)

Gretta Van Fleet's album is pretty good I also like Imagine Dragons. The whole Hamilton cast recording is extra-ordinary!

I should have said "newer". As time goes by, the music periods become larger and larger. I can identify many songs by year from about 1970 to 1985, but after that it becomes a decade-by-decade thing.
