If WDET was sold to a Commercial Broadcaster.
If WDET was sold to a Commercial Broadcaster.
Let’s say, Wayne State for whatever reason decided to sell WDET 101.9 ,what format today would work? Here’s what I think An all 90’s station kind of a Jack type format but all 90’s it would include Country Crossover 90’s,Alternative 90’s,Rock 90’s,R&B 90’s,and Top 40 90’s and the station would have to be perfectly balanced and just simply call it “The Greatest Hits of the 90’s.”with an extensive playlist, I would name the station “Rewind 101.9.”What do you think would work if 101.9 became commercial?
Re: If WDET was sold to a Commercial Broadcaster.
Pointless question. WSU will NEVER sell the station. I volunteered there for many years. The school was approached more than once by potential buyers and always turned them down. IIRC, a major player offered $50 million in the early to middle 1990s; the school said no. The exposure it gives WSU is greatly valued by the folks who gave me my diploma.
But let me indulge this foolish fantasy momentarily. Let's say the station was sold to a commercial broadcaster. Whatever the new owners did, this place would soon be full of people complaining about hearing just another version of the same old crap. Some things never change.

Wasn't there a clause that they couldn't ever sell it, or am I thinking about a Chicago station...

It is certainly a prime piece of real estate.

IIRC, the UAW put the station on the air, then transferred it to WSU with the provision that it must remain university property. Corrections cheerfully accepted if I am wrong.

No, no, I think you're right. That's the provision I was thinking of.

If they did sell it, they could switch to punk-country. Start the format switch by looping "I Wanna Whip Your Cow" for a solid week, then bring on a new airstaff anchored by JP McCarthy in the morning and Cowboy in afternoon drive.

I think Cowboy and RadioKev would be a lovely couple. Don't you?
Re: If WDET was sold to a Commercial Broadcaster.
WDET has shows like Radio Lab and The Moth that simply can not be replaced by any format.

Hey Vic, the purpose of this post was simply a what if scenario not intended to slam anyone .You don’t know me and I don’t know you and we’ll leave it at that.
