Radio And the year you Graduated.
Radio And the year you Graduated.
How did radio influence you in the year you Graduated what were the stations you had listened to ,the year I Graduated was 1973 and the stations that I was tuned in to were CKLW the Big 8 ,WCAR 1130,WXYZ1270 on FM it was CJOM 88.7,WDRQ 93.1,WABX 99.5,WRIF 101.1 and WWWW 106.7 on occasion I would tune in to WJZZ 105.9. You don’t have to be raised in the “D” if you lived in another city that’s cool but share with us as to what stations were close to your heart at the time.
Re: Radio And the year you Graduated.
I graduated in 1977 in Indiana listening to a fairly good FM rock station (WNAP). A month after graduation, my family moved to Michigan and I discovered what rock radio could really sound like as I discovered WABX, WWWW, and WRIF.
Re: Radio And the year you Graduated.
When you said graduated do you mean High School or College?
Re: Radio And the year you Graduated.
High School ,not every one had the opportunity to go to College ,I should’ve been more specific.

Re: Radio And the year you Graduated.
I graduated in 2003, so I had a big, fat, whopping nothing. Stations I usually had on were 89x, Riff, CSX and DRQ, maybe The Drive. Maybe CJAM if I could get it. Rock fans had really slim pickens for outlets post 1999. In the span of a few years, WLLZ went smooth jazz, The Edge came and went, 96.3 went soccer mom, 97.1 came and went, 102.7 was all gone...so yeah, I had a hard time filling up the presets in my 92 Cavalier.

!973 was the year i graduated. My musical tastes are all over the map, so I listened to a few stations, WRIF, WABX, and WHND (Honey Radio), WDRQ
Re: Radio And the year you Graduated.
So did anyone like WJZZ ? I thought they were a good change of pace and they had great people behind the Mic, one person that came to WJZZ later on in the 80’s was Rosetta Hines she was probably the best talent that was there.

Re: Radio And the year you Graduated.
Graduated from High School in 1966 and I remember flipping rather easily from 1270 to 1310 (WXYZ and WKNR) in a second with a pocket transistor radio. I held it near the window of the school bus. CKLW was big as you all know when it hit the airwaves with its program and news format,
I would have to say that those three stations were the most popular in my time frame. As I remember WRIF came in later years. It was interesting for me to work at WXYZ-TV starting in 1974 with WRIF right next door then.

Hey Six ,was it WRIF and WLLZ that had trailers for studios ?

HS class of '80, WRIF, WABX, WWWW, even the "Big 8", CKLW....(I think WLLZ started up in late 1980 the fall after my graduation)...
Re: Radio And the year you Graduated.
Lido ,I believe WLLZ was summer of ‘80 like July, I remember listening to the launch at midnight when they changed from WBFG to Rock but they keep The WBFG calls for a few months and were commercial free for 3 months.
Re: Radio And the year you Graduated.
I graduated from High School in 1999. I call that winter the rock radio blood bath. I am down in The Toledo area but obviously many Detroit stations come in on a Car radio. My 1989 Buick just had a stock AM/FM delco radio but had decent sound, pulled in Detroit stations well.
I was into: 97.1 Exteme radio, 105.1 The Edge, too a lesser extent Planet 96.3, 94.5 XKR, and Buzz 106.5/97.3. First of the year, 97.1 started to phase the music out, I think by spring it was 97.1 FM talk. The Buzz flipped to rock 106, which flopped. 105.1 the edge went classic soul, by graduation all that was left was XKR, 89x, WRIF. for me.

Re: Radio And the year you Graduated.
The Edge was good but short lived,I think part of the problem for any format on that station for a few years is the fact that it was a very successful Commercial Classical station and had a great loyal following for 37 years than Greater Media decided to drop Classical because the format was losing money in other markets.
Re: Radio And the year you Graduated.
It was, GM also canned WFLN in Philly, which is successor Max met the same fate. The Edge didn't make it because it wasn't making money and the market was over crowded with rock stations, plus the rumor was 106.7 was going to drop country for Jammin oldies, 105.1 beat them to it, On Easter Sunday of 99. AM/FM, who owned W-4, I believe had launched Jammin oldies in a couple other markets. W-4 of course got canned 6 months later.
Re: Radio And the year you Graduated.
1027Brian ,You mentioned Jammin` Oldies another good format but again it was Not out long enough The Groove here in Detroit was a great sounding station and it had a some good DJ’s but Greater Media in my opinion didn’t give it their all.
