I find this topic very interesting. I hope a lot of people chime in. When was the last time there was a pirate station in the area? There was one in Toledo about a year or so ago that was talked about on this board.

I'm hard pressed to remember any of pirate stations but I'm interested in hearing more about them.

Back in the late 60's or early 70's I have vague recollections of a pirate station on the AM dial near 1460. The best known one was Radio New York International at 1610 AM. I heard that station many times in Michigan.

There was a pirate in the late 90s in Howell with the call sign WFLR. They operated for almost 2 years before WHMI then owner Greg Jablonski ratted them out to the FCC. From what I can recall, Jablonski actually heard the broadcast when visiting a downtown store. They were pretty brazen and even had bumper stickers printed up.

I remember many pirate stations in the mid to late 90's
90.3 Detroit - Radio Santidad - Religious Hispanic
92.7 Detroit - La poderosa - Regional Mexican
92.7 Unknown - "U-Rock" - Rock
94.3 Detroit - Radio Emmanuel - Religious Hispanic
95.9 Detroit - La Maquina Musical - Regional Mexican - was shut down and there was an article about it in the FreePress
97.5 Detroit - Mexican/Religious
107.9 Detroit - La Gigante Caribe - Tropical

These were all on the air about the same time 1998-ish

Grand Rapids had some. The biggest signal had to be the Spanish Religious station on 104.9 that was on for a few years. Wonder if it's somehow related to one of two Spanish Religious LPFMs that have come on in the last couple of years

Believe it or not I do recall another pirate at 87.9 that was Down River Detroit still in the City limits around Zug Island that was Contemporary Christian and that was around 2007 just before I retired.

There was a 97.7 in Adrian that got out well. Here is one link I found about it (there are more to be found): http://www.cnn.com/US/9612/16/rebel.preacher/index.html
