WGLN 105.5

Post by burytheneedle » Wed Oct 20, 2021 5:39 pm

Does anyone know where the old WGLN studio was located? Wikipedia points to a field in western Lucas County. I've heard people say it was in/ near Berkey. I'm curious if it's the little white building that sits next to a tower just north of 20 on 295 (across from the Trap and Skeet Club?

It's a random question but Toledo radio history has always fascinated me.

Mike Shaw, from Toledo, used the "Home Of The Jones Boys" concept first at WTRX 1330 Flint circa 1965. All the DJs used the stage name Jones. Most were famous Joneses, like Davy, Casey, John Paul, etc. John Landecker used the Jones name he picked out, "Dow Jones", at his first open air Top 40 gig, in 1966. Mike Shaw brought the concept to WGLN 105.5, now WQQO, in 1968.

The History Card says 0.5 miles south of Berkey, OH on Route 295, in answer to the original question.

It wasnt in a building, it was a small trailer sitting in the middle of a field. I was in it twice, but dont remember what road it was on. Somewhere I have a polaroid picture of it, and a pic of myself inside it. Middle of a field as I remember it.

Apparently, the Jones Boy DJ memories of WGLN weren't as positive as John Landecker's were of WTRX. Sounds like the main thing Ken Deutsch didn't like was the Country Music format at WGLN vs. the Top 40 Format at WTRX. Deutsch refers to driving miles and miles out to the transmitter building where the engineer dropped a burned out beacon part through the ceiling of the building, which dennis10 refers to as a trailer. It's hard to believe a 3000 watt FM transmitter location, required to put a 70 dBu signal over Sylvania, a suburb of Toledo, was that remote.

Let's see if I'm able to link to a photo of the white barn studio/transmitter and WGLN sign: https://i2.wp.com/reporter-on-the-road. ... C960&ssl=1
Lew Dickey, Sr. of course bought the place, fired everybody after 6 months, changed it to WXEZ-FM Sylvania and Bonneville EZ listening music until the late 70's. Lew Dickey, Jr. and his brother are of course the disgraced former owners of Cumulus Radio/Media and all the wrath they brought to radio.

Looks like the tower is still there, circa 300 feet tall.

The WLMB Channel 40 tower is a least twice as far away from Toledo. I don't see how Mr. Deutsch thought it was so far away.

Another article by Mr. Deutsch shows the Hooper Ratings for Toledo.
