Robert Shiels stepping aside from WTOL after 27 years

He plans to leave when the severe weather season is over. It looks like more golfing is planned for him in the future. Best of luck to him.

I actually met him taking a tour of the WTOL studios over 10 years ago. He was quick to answer my questions and even gave me a weather map at the end. Really nice guy.

Robert's gone through allot. Glad to see he is now stable. I'm sure he'll be around and still on-air. But... something smells fishy at WTOL. There's a reason, we aren't seeing yet, regarding his leaving. Notice how he is the ONLY full-timer left on WTOL?

Did Robert get Covid? Seems like he had a health issue a while back? Hope he's doing alright, despite being married to Andrew Z's ex-wife.

No. Had a problem with the bottle.

This sucks. His forecasts weren’t full of hype, and he seemed like a genuinely nice guy on air and off. Hope he is able to get some relaxation after this.

Also if what you’re saying is true TeddyBear, I’m glad he took care of that problem. I’ve had several family members go down that road.

Only full-timer? Are you saying Melissa, Jeff, Chris Vickers, the rest of the morning crew are not full time?

Exactly.

Notice how nobody is in all 5 days? Ever wonder why not a single one of them do the noon news?

And since you mentioned Melissa, she and Jeff Smith do night news now, but only 4 days a week each. Shaniqua Stratford, formerly of NBC 24 News, Elkart (from the 22 and 28 studios) is doing mornings. Dan Cummins in only on 36 at 630 and 10, also filling in at 11pm. Then Ariel something is on in the morning. Steven Jackson is still doing traffic and a few minor reports. Tim Miller is only on mornings sometimes, but is also on 36. Remember, 11 and 36 are 2 separate payrolls, hence 2 separate GM's. WUPW is not Tegna.

That's pretty sad that they've fallen to the point where they can't even have full-time employees across-the-board anymore😒

It's the wave of the future. Things will never be how they were. Stations barely serve the public. They serve the corporate execs and shareholders.

We know 48 does not serve the public at all. So that does not appear to be a way of keeping a license on any station class. Even CA/CD, which is supposed to be strictest of all classes for serving the public. Prime example- No EAS ever, no local sports or news. The world could be ending. But WMNT-CD viewers would never know about it.

I'm curious now. If anyone can receive 48, watch on August 11 at 2:20 pm for the EAS test. If the NPT is not broadcast (or within 24 hours after scheduled test), that is a violation of the FCC rules.

If there's enough memory, I'll run the TiVo recorder August 11th on one of the CH 48 subchannels for the airing (not) of the End Of The World (EAS) Test thru standard broadcast channels for the first time in a long time. Likewise I also eyeball SiriusXM to see what they're doing (or no audio dead air like the first EAS PEP test with had the EOM 3 duckfarts and that's all.) I usually have pretty good luck with the iHeart HD subchannels, I know WIOT-HD2 worked for the first EAS PEP test, but I'm more curious to monitor Cumulus HD subchannels, especially 94.5-HD2 and 105.5-HD2. 8-11-21 will seriously tax my ability to use every recorder I can dig-up. Even an old cassette deck with one HD into left channel and another HD into the right channel.

Could Robert head to Loco 4? He's from Wyandotte.

Ben Bailey just left.
