Is Canada getting ATSC 3.0?

A place to go for those of you who wish to discuss happenings in OH, IN, IL, WI, and Ontario. OSU sucks, by the way.

Is Canada getting ATSC 3.0?

Post by Splouge » Sat Feb 13, 2021 1:34 pm

I can't see what use Canada would have for the new standard. Due to CRTC red tape, subchannels are very rare in the great white north, so they wouldn't be able to take advantage of one of ATSC 3.0's coolest improvements (more subchannels). And channel sharing on the ATSC 1.0 stations would be confusing, because again, the red tape with subchannels. Is the CRTC gonna grant licenses on a second frequency, or will stations have to choose to exclusively broadcast on one standard?

If it's not coming to Canada, will next gen TVs or converter boxes even be available there? When the current standard gets totally phased out in America, Windsorites might lose Detroit stations.

I havent really read anything about 3.0 coming to an OTA station here in Kanuckistan. You have to understand that the gov;t cabal here is not out to help OTA viewers in anyway. They dont want to hurt the pay tv monopolies which they have a hand in.So as not to promote cutting the cord.

They know viewers near the american border will have a percentage of folks watching OTA.They have to accept that fact but in this new repack they asked american stations to cut the power coming toward canada and have also placed canadian stations on top of american stations that are popular with canadian viewers. The CRTC did this to a couple of Buff stations that were fav. with viewers in the GTA.

Windsorites will need converter boxes but Im sure the next gen tv's we will be able to purchase, Windsor/Essex is too close to Detroit to ever be deprived of our free OTA stations from across the river.

If CHWI didn't have that weak UHF 17 repeater, WHNE could have had that frequency. The repeater is absolutely frivolous, the Wheatley signal can be received here in Melvindale with an indoor antenna, yet the repeater signal is nowhere to be seen here. If their main transmitter can cover Melvindale, it'll obviously cover Windsor.

The CRTC gave that worthless repeater preferential treatment so that Essex County would be cut off from a Detroit LPTV, which of course, ended up being WHNE. That's probably also the reason that the gov't gave TVO a big buncha bucks to keep their retransmitters on the air.

They've also ignored WHNE's app to increase power for OVER A YEAR, stations close to the border need approval from the FCC and CRTC, and the CRTC has been ignoring it for over a year.
