Slogans not matching stations

A place to go for those of you who wish to discuss happenings in OH, IN, IL, WI, and Ontario. OSU sucks, by the way.

Slogans not matching stations

Post by TeddyBear » Fri Aug 14, 2020 8:18 am

I've caught WRVF playing 1970's Elton John during the weekdays, yet they are "The 80's to now.... 101.5 The River."

This morning, within a business, I overheard a VERY VERY VERY loose aux marked "September" and then a couple of songs later "Jukebox Hero" on "90's to now.....Mix 96.7-WBVI" in a Chuck Matthew's bossy-monotone voiced sweeper.

What is the point of slogans, when they do not match what the station is SUPPOSED to be doing?

Maybe it's just me noticing this.

It's not just 70's Elton John, but Brown Eyed Girl from 1967 and other '70s songs too on the River, so you're not the only one noticing this.

Good. If they were consistent on theme weekends, within weekend format, I would not care. But this seems to be a weekday event. The slogans need to apply 140% of the time.

If there were a good Mainstream CHR in NW Ohio (which does not exist), would they get away with playing 1920's flapper music? No. WRVF and WBVI should not be able to either. For example, even though it's a piss poor CHR, "TOLEDO'S (MARION'S or LIMA'S) NUMBER ONE HIT MUSIC CHANNEL" probably should not play anything older. I seriously doubt they would though. Denny Shaefer was the exception.

In early 2010s, Tampa Bay's "Play 98.7" carried a Top 40 format, with a slogan of something like "Today's Hits, Without The Rap". Around 2012, shortly before switching to an all-sports format, they still used this slogan, but one time, immediately after a liner said "Today's Hits, Without The Rap" -- they played a rap song.

I want my 13 minutes of nonstop gossip!!

Just heard a "This is the new Q105.5" sweeper at 8:18 this morning. No longer matching the moniker or the service newness. Also Carson Daily was too low. TURN UP OPX #3! Keep it at zero! What other programs were a disaster, because the satellite pot was too low?

FYI- Eric Chase VT's should not sound "spitty!" Neither should his show. Reduce the treble. Also add some midrange back in his mic.

It's not me....Is there a market for "bossy-monotone".. if so, I need to work on it.

Voice was not you, but your style. Not flexible. Not a voice actor, as I have told you should try to be, not monotone and too compressed.

Not everyone can do everything. For instance, I don't do audio books. I'm not a "guy next door" type of VO. I just don't have that sound. I do have my niche and market to those strengths. For radio imaging that would be NT/S, Rock and Country. I do A LOT of automotive and industrial narration.

I've had a lot of training/coaching since leaving Toledo over 12 years ago, which is probably the last time we spoke. I don't consider myself a "voice actor", but a voice talent. I must be doing something right, I book a lot.

My voice doesn't need compression :) I send my VO unprocessed. Compression is done by the producer, not me.

Either way... we are off topic. DM, if you wish to continue this conversation.

After a DM from a former PD on here, another one comes to mind. "Supertalk 1560- WTOD. The Big One!"

WTOD was only 500 watts. So was not a big anything... other than a joke! Compared to WTOD-AM, WSPD was on steroids and a giant in many ways.

I also found a TOH from 2008 that described themselves as, "One of America's greatest radio stations". That was somewhat misleading, as they were not that great in ratings for quite a few years.

WTOD 1560AM was 5000 Watts daytime when they had a directional signal with two towers and a working ground system. One tower got axed, and they went to 1500W ND days, so before the drop, they were tied as Toledo's strongest AM station depending on where you were in a null or not, ground conductivity, and skywave differences in the two frequencies. Let's put it like this, I was in Ottawa Ohio in Putnam County and WTOD 1560 (with 5kW) was like a local and SPeeDy was very weak in the 1990's. Since the 100.7 translator isn't really doing jack, Cumulus should have kept WTOD 1560 and downloaded all of the WLQR AM1470 programming onto 1560 before they turned-in the Dickey Brothers license and killed-off their Dad's station on 1470. Cumulus, if they had any cash, could snag 1520 and use that for Tigers baseball and all their brokered programming and it's little translator, provided they could dump their 106.5 trainwreck.

That was the old days, when "Your Hick Parade" was on WTOD, they were Countrypolitan, etc. But we are discussing slogans, not history.
