101.9 on today

Post by Jim Sofonia » Thu Jul 01, 2021 6:12 pm

I heard 101.9 on in TC today. They ID'd as "memories" or something like that. I could just barely hear the same song on 92.3 and 100.1. The audio on 101.9 sounded distant and mono. Maybe they have a mic in front of an old transistor radio for the STL.

Ok, not a station I check much anymore as they seem to be off most of the time.

I heard 100.1 this morning in the null of my 20-mile local WVIB during the big tropo opening. First time ever heard! I mean, I wish it weren't on the air at all along with the other few Memories stations, but alas, it will surely turn off again like usual. Setting the bar low, of course. Anyone know how much power this is putting out (realistically), such as what its typical coverage area looks like these days? 92.3 and 99.3 were in solidly as well. 101.9 was all WDEZ in stereo, no sign of Traverse City anywhere on that frequency.

I remember seeing an STA for either 92.3 or 99.3 that had it running at 1.4kW from its licensed tower site (which has some elevation).

When I was in Manistee this past weekend, 92.3, 99.3, and 100.1 were all in fairly decently with RDS (something the Synergy Media stations don't have). I think at least one of those three has been on consistently for a few months if not longer.

Speaking of Synergy, which obviously don't have RDS like you say, is 96.3 KLA even on the air? I haven't heard it for months. I mean, it's not greatly easy to here in Fremont, but it has always come in if I aim in that direction with its crappy audio. But nothing. 98.7 has been a very hard catch too to the point I thought that one has been off a few months. Both of them at my Ludington Rest Area site struggle versus Chicago that regularly takes them out 4 miles from their tower, so not like they're great signals to start with.

WKLA did post to its Facebook page on July 4.

WMOM is a far superior operation in all respects.

Yes, 96.3 wkla is on air but every Saturday it goes silent from noon till Sunday morning. 94.9, 97.7 both have been on reduced power in the last week and even 101.5 is on reduced power (not synergy owned). In manistee it’s a pain to get 96.3, 102.7 and 94.1. Lite 96 will bulldoze 96.3 it (did one day earlier this week) and 102.7 will get overpowered by wrvm. To much surprise the other morning 96.3 kla was not able to pull in at all but 102.7 was able to barely pull in even though 96.3 is a tad bit stronger.
Only 2 of the Ludington stations come in well in manistee (1 is a simulcast).
Wish 102.7 would get there signal back to the way it was before. Some days it will start to fade out near Freesoil area.

I saw that WMOM's new ownership is bidding on both FM allocations up for auction in that part of the state (93.3C3 Onekama and 99.9A Custer). I didn't even know that WKLA had a Facebook page!

If there were any smart people at Synergy, WKLA should be on 98.7 with the simulcast of 97.7 moving to 96.3. K-Rock seems to be the only station in that group that does okay. Big Dog (which seems like has been on reduced power for years) gets destroyed by WTCM, Duke FM, the Bull, B93, and/or the Moose depending on location. It's likely Z93 (whose 60dBu doesn't even touch Mason County) get more listeners than WKLA (FM) even in Mason County.

Also, WKLA (AM) is still advertising as being on 92.7. The translator "moved" to 106.3 around Christmas with 92.7 going silent at that time.

Back on the Henderson topic, his losing the WTCU CP may have been one of the best things to ever happen in Northern Michigan radio. It allowed Good News Media to win the auction when 95.9 Fife Lake came up for auction again and then get it onto the same tower as Z93 as a Class C2 (I think WTCU was proposed as a Class A or maybe a C3)

I wonder if there might be tower work going on at 97.7/101.5's shared tower site in Filer Township.

I agree with lite mix that this station sounds very good doing the Classic Hits.

WLDR 101.9 Simulcast On WARD 750

Post by Ben Zonia » Thu Oct 21, 2021 3:53 pm

If you like the format, and can't get WLDR 101.9 very well, it presently simulcasts on WARD 750 in the Petoskey Harbor Springs Cheboygan Area. It has a decent signal over all of Emmet and Cheboygan County.

Heard WLDR quite well in Lake County this week. Could get a lock on seek mode consistently from about Wolf Lake northward and still listenable farther south in the Baldwin area.

I'd say they are back up to full strength in terms of ERP. Audio levels need to be increased a notch, though.

92.3 in Benzie County also seemed to be at or near full power. Picked up a decent signal near Irons, RDS included, but the audio settings were way too low. I heard what appeared to be Easy Listening / MOR type music.

I'm gonna post a summary of my observations of various stations in the area from these last several days probably tomorrow evening.

Henderson has surrendered the license for 100.1.

WBQU? Does that translate to an insult of some sort?

A sad end to the nearly never-ending saga of WRQT Bear Lake. How many years will this allotment be off the air now? Will radio still be around at that point?
