Licenses close to expiring

101.9 WLDR hasn't been on in almost a year. I think it was sometime in late October 2019 when it went off, so it's getting very close to one year of silence, which should mean automatic license cancellation. However, its sister stations have been off for much longer at times (except for possibly brief runs to say that they were on once during the past year) but have managed to retain their licenses.

106.7 WSRT has until mid-December to return to the air (IMHO, it will return with Christmas music to start), while 92.5 WFDX has a little longer, until late February 2021. Incidentally, all filed for a license renewal in the last cycle (and all were approved).

I don't see commercial radio's income picture improving. One question that station owners need to keep asking themselves is whether this is still a business, or just a partially self-financing hobby.

Most of us need a little hope just to get through from day to day. But hoping that station income will somehow get better in the future is probably a little wacky. At some point, it just isn't worth it to turn the transmitter on anymore.

Could a new owner fix things? Maybe. But whose revenue stream is going to feed this new venture?

Personally, I think it's tragic every time a station goes dark. But here in the real world, it's probably time to turn some of these damaged stations off and stop the hurt.

When an owner can't even come up with the money the FCC demands for a license renewal, it's the right thing to just put the poor old hound down.

And I mourn the loss of 'the good times.'

The sick part is that when stations go dark, a new frequency opens up. And that means some poor fool will probably end up buying the license from the FCC a few years down the road, when radio ad dollars will be even harder to find.

According to the 13th Circuit Court website, the trial between Henderson and the Coynes is going to be in January 20-22:

There really isn't anyone to root for in that particular fight.

True.

But, it will be exciting to see what will happen to WLDR when the judge makes his final decision.

This is like watching two people in road rage, where they both crash and die.

Ask not what your country can do FOR you; ask what they are about to do TO YOU!!
