Easy 93.3

Post by Schyster » Sat Aug 15, 2020 12:01 pm

I noticed this morning that WXLA is now going by "Easy 93.3", playing "easy" music from the 1970s onward. A format adjustment of sorts of a decade or two forward from their previous format.

Is the translator on the air now? I figured this would probably happen once they got the translator on.

Translator went up about a week ahead of the format flip and new branding. The Nostalgia format was satellite fed from (I believe) Dial Global. The new format sounds to be coming from in-house. TOH network news has been replaced with local newscasts Monday-Friday daytime.

Signal is pretty solid as far as DeWitt on the north end, between I-96 and Grand Ledge to the west.

I haven't heard the programming yet, but it wouldn't surprise me if it's very similar to 1400 / 104.1 in the Bay City area.

It reminds me a great deal of 1400/104.1. I haven't listened to those stations long enough to know how close the comparison would be, but it is definitely along those lines.

Listened to the station a bit; not my cup of tea but it does sound polished. Signal range to the east is particularly good by FM translator standards; had no issue picking it up all the way to the outlet mall at the I-96 / M-59 interchange in Livingston County. Surprising, considering 93.5 WHMI is right next door.

At first, I thought this was replacing Z93 and got stunned.

They/them, non-binary and proud.

Remember that “2000 Mules” was concocted by a circus of elephants.
The right needs to stop worry about what’s between people’s legs. Instead, they should focus on what’s between their ears.
Audacity sucks.

Under normal conditions I can take the translator signal north to Price Road in Clinton County (five miles south of St. Johns), at which point Z93 overpowers it. On a day when there's good skip I can pick it up in St. Johns proper.

I worked for the MacDonalds in Cadillac in the mid 80s and we had WEVZ-FM, "Easy 96.7" but that easiness could be Zamfir, Perry Como, Mantovani or whatever was on the automated reels. It went over to CHR and WWLZ, "Lakes FM" about 1988 and is now WLXV, playing Country as "The Bull."

The old shirts go in a closet to be taken out and put to use, with modifications, it seems.

Around the time MacDonald's WMBN (now WLXT) in Petoskey programmed a similar format branded Michigan's Beautiful North. The Easy Listening audience back then was a completely different crowd.

I was working for WILS when the MacDonald's purchased the station in 1989. The sale closed three weeks before Ken Sr. passed away suddenly. His funeral was held the day before the planned format flip of WILS-FM to Gold-Based AC as WKKP, KAP 101.7. The change took place on schedule, as both Andy and Mac felt their dad would want them to move ahead and take care of business. I know people may have mixed feelings about the MacDonald's but one thing I can say from experience is that they have a dedicated work ethic, something I'm sure Ken Sr. instilled as he taught his next generation the radio trade. Despite the fact his kids were working in the family business, he required them to start at the bottom and work their way up just like anyone else. I spent many a night working on various projects with Andy MacDonald, who stayed at the plant just as late as I did, if not later on occasion. Not to mention the many times I saw Mac in the winter with shovel in hand, clearing the snow off the sidewalks (in his suit and tie no less).

Ahhh....memories!

I was peeved when Hot 96 Lakes FM up in Cadillac flipped to a simulcast of WLXT as "Lite 96." That area went without a decent CHR/Pop signal for many years! WUPS returned to Adult CHR for a brief time in the very late 90s.

Now, there's no shortage of contemporary hit music between Z93 (the Traverse City one, not the Midland one) and CDY.

I'm visiting family in the Lansing area for Labor Day and have it on in the background as I type this. The music is mostly '80s and '90s, not dissimilar to 98.7 The Breeze or 100.5 The River in GR except with no currents or recurrents. In the time I've been listening, I haven't heard anything more current than Kelly Clarkson's "A Moment Like This" from 2002. The previous America's Best Music format was leaning very much in a Soft AC direction anyway (not much Nat Cole or Andy Williams anymore but plenty of Adele and Mariah Carey), and a number of the songs now being played - like Neil Diamond "Sweet Caroline", Steve Perry "Foolish Heart" and Celine Dion "The Power of Love" - were played in the previous format as well.

Surprisingly, they do still mention the AM frequency in some of their imaging.

It kind of surprises me that they chose to do the music in-house, since Westwood One also has a Lite AC format (which is used by the Breeze stations in the U.P.). But as M.W. says, it sounds very polished.
