Re: Fred Heumann out
I didn't realize he had been with WLNS for 17 years. It was his second stint at channel 6. He worked there as a sports reporter in the early 80's when it was WJIM-TV, before moving to Detroit.
My uneducated guess, based upon the article, is that it's a mutual parting of the ways, and that an amicable separation agreement is in the works. Have to credit Heumann and WLNS for not discussing details of his departure with the media-at-large. Shows a level of professionalism on both sides.

Re: Fred Heumann out
Fred is extremely talented, and deserves better treatment than this. At a minimum, he belongs back in Detroit, or in some other major market. Let the CMU grads cut their teeth in bush-league markets like Lansing.

Re: Fred Heumann out
He is probably the longest-running sports anchor in the history of channel 6, and second in the market only to Tim Staudt.

Re: Fred Heumann out
One of a kind, and whomever takes the 6 microphone as "lead horseman" [ wrestling four horseman reference ] he or she will have some big shoes to fill, but they will carve their own path. now if Fred has to sit out a non compete, I just wonder if he might pop up say back at 10 , doing sports at 5pm as well as/or just the WILX produced FOX47 News at 6: 30 & 10 Jus' sayin'
Re: Fred Heumann out
He could also pop up in Flint for the ousted Ryan Slocum.
Re: Fred Heumann out
And the NEWWWWWWWW 6sports sports director is [drum roll] AUDREY DAHLGREN!!!
Re: Fred Heumann out
Hope he turns up at 12. At least we don't have to listen to Ryan "Booker T Spinarooni" Slocum anymore. Or hear him say, during basketball reporting that the player is "puttin' on his jammies".
Re: Fred Heumann out
"Uncle Fred" mentored a lot of young journalists like Lisa Byington. He will be sorely missed. Doesn't make any sense why the new GM would force Fred out. They must want to replace him with younger (and cheaper) talent. However, they won't be able to replace Fred's knowledge and contacts. Bad move.

Re: Fred Heumann out
The last sentence in that article "WLNS-TV is owned by Nexstar Media Group" says all that needs to be said about why Fred Heumann is out. MESSTAR has a track record of crapping on good people in the stations they buy and exalting crappy people. "To hell with a good product, save a buck at all costs and let advertisers have their way with you" is their philosophy, not their principle because they have none.
