Sports journalism recruiting

Post by sinklair » Wed Dec 07, 2022 12:34 am

The Michigan Association of Broadcasters is hosting a career fair Wednesday for sports journalism jobs. So 25-66’s General Manager and HR Director are representing Sinclair at the career fair.

Here’s a free piece of advice for any job applicant. Do not waste your time interviewing with Becky or Ashley. 25-66 has the least commitment to sports in the Flint market.

TV5 isn't much better. They didn't even have a sports report on last night's 11:00 news, and rarely have sports during the 6:00 news. Instead they leave it or Meg or David to read sports they know little about.

No sports again on TV5 at 11:00 on a Friday night when there's lots to talk about, especially high school basketball and Spirit hockey (I'm not sure if the Firebirds were playing).

Welcome to the world under Jayne Hodak. She pushed out Molzon and Slocum. She doesn’t care about sports. It shows her lack of knowledge of local news viewers. But don’t expect it to change. She’ll do the bare minimum when it comes to local sports to get by. Don’t go work for Jayne/WNEM if you have any desire to do sports.

Serious question regarding local sports coverage: is it even necessary other than for high school sports? For hs sports, it is very much necessary, but major college and pro sports highlights are very much accessible. This is not a defense of gutting sports departments by inept management by any means.

What's more pathetic: harassing an old man who is paying to do a radio show or supporting a grifter like Trump?

More mis-information. Hodak had absolutely nothing to do with Molzon and Slocum's demise at 12. Those fools died by their own hands. I'm not a Hodak fan but lets keep the bull shit to a minimum.

Soundchaser, you Sinklair wannabe. Stick to what you know… which is apparently very little.

Hodak was absolutely behind Greg and Ryan’s departures. Her petty vendettas cost two of the very best sports journalists their jobs. Finally Gray had enough of her BS and showed her the door. How she was able to weasel her way into a Meredith-turned-Gray newsroom is beyond many of her former coworkers who were glad to see her gone.

No sports again last night at 11:00 on TV5. Saturday and Sunday are the busiest sports days of the week.

Apparenty I know a lot more than you. I don't want to go into the delicate details of their release because it's nobodies business. Just rest assure that Hodak had nothing to so with it. If they would have behaved, they would most likely still be there. Unless they got a better offer and left on their own accord. Truth matters.

You really expect everyone to believe that the person who did the firing had no impact on that decision? That is some next level BS.

UNM: In the words of Will Smith… keep my name out of your f’n mouth!

But I do agree with you… Jayne is the worst. I mean after Karin and whoever is the news director of the day at ABC 12.

Matt: it’s a fair question about the value of sports in a newscast. Consultants have been downplaying the importance of sports for decades. They say there’s a very limited audience for local sports content. However, most consultants are failed news directors, so take it for what it’s worth.

Yes, you can get Lions, UM and MSU highlights in a lot of places. But you can also get election results, school closings, the weather forecast, and obituaries in a lot of places online as well. Really good local sports reporters (like Ryan, Greg, Jeanna Trotman, etc. — pretty much anyone other than Scot Johnson) can give you the story behind the game. These are big events that bring big crowds. Local high school sports are part of the community’s identity. And let’s not forget, most GMs come from sales. They’ll continue to air sports because they can get local advertisers to pay for it.

The next level BS is what you are pedaling. So you expect everyone to believe that Hodak killed the sports golden goose at 12 because she had a vendetta against Molzon and Slocum? Pure fantasy. Even Pete Veto was smart enough to not let something like that happen. Sure, Hodak may have delivered the bad news to them but she had nothing to do getting them to that point. I'm afraid there are certain things that happen in the work arena (and outside the work arena) that you just can't come back from. Molzon was called back to Flint from Indianapolis during a major national sports event to be fired. Why? Because Hodak didn't like him? Get real. Both you and Stink are dumb as rocks if you believe that.

It means that the on the job behaviour of one of the persons mentioned was no longer tolerated. The others outside work behaviour caught up to him and he was let go. Simple.
