WGER flips to 106.3 The Core

Post by Mega Hertz » Tue Sep 20, 2022 2:35 pm

I hear there was a flip? It's a Jesus station (shocker) where I am. Anyone know what's up?

90s/00s Active/Alternative hybrid as "The Core." Dave and Chuck the Freak, syndicated from WRIF, is the morning show. First song was "Crush" by Stone Temple Pilots.

Looks like a "next generation of classic rock" with an Alternative flavor. No '80s butt rock and no mumble rap/bedroom pop, which should please many on this board.

Interesting!

I guess the story we were told a year or two ago of the Hot AC station pulling its weight was either bullshit all along or no longer true.

Will definitely have to give this a listen. The first hour at Noon today was on the wimpy side but some good music has been played since then.

Same V.O. guy as 101 WRIF. They are already playing Dave and Chuck teases between songs. Interestingly, the on air positioner differs from the one used on the web site. On-air, the station uses the tagline "The Rock Alternative."

If this format performs reasonably well, it'll be interesting to see if it shows up on one of Alpha's underperforming signals in Dayton. There is definitely a sizable hole for this type of format there.

Microphone processing for whatever DJ is on the air sounds like trash and needs to be fixed.

Edit - this new station sure has a boatload of commercials.

I wonder what they'll play when Christmas season rolls around? Alternative rock Christmas music?

Whoever fixed the thread title, thank you. I was on a job site when I heard and didn't have all the information yet.

Plenty of ways to listen online. :)

Overall, I'm fairly impressed by the playlist so far! Down Rodeo by RATM. Bad Religion by Godsmack. Some other hard rocking stuff mixed in with some lighter fare.

The mix reminds me of Rock 105.5 in Port Huron somewhat, but 106.3 The Core is more willing to play the heavy stuff.

Music wise, I'll give this station a grade of A-. Pretty darn good by broadcast radio standards. A MILLION TIMES better than Fault 98.7 in Detroit.

The music formula used on WGER is how WDZH in Detroit *ought* to sound.

If WGER can get its commercial load under control, this station definitely has some potential to take wind out of Z93's sails.

106.3 has slipped in a couple surprises, such as "Rockin' in the Free World" by Neil Young and "For Whom the Bell Tolls" by Metallica.

I'm hearing the Neil Young cut right now! Good shit!

V/O is the same as WRIF, also.

I'm digging it so far. I'll go B+ early on.

I love the more energetic sounding reads he does on WGER and on Liquid Metal. His reads on WRIF sound so boring.

Going to have to listen tomorrow on line after Z93’s Morning After as I’m out of market and have a local station at 106.1. Playlist listed online reminds me of a combination of SXM’s Turbo and Lithium and doesn’t appear that bad.

Still think they’re somewhat foolish, with the tiny signal they have, to go up against Z93 and their signal. Personally, they should have flipped to Classic Country as they would have a strangle hold on the country market in the Tri Cities and could have really hurt KCQ

"I sure will miss Mix 106.3!"

...is a phrase less likely to be heard than "the Detroit Lions are in the Super Bowl!"
😅

Classic Country a la Duke FM would've been a decent way to go...perhaps. I'm not sold the demos are there to support it, and such a format might've cannibalized WCEN a little too much. Bear in mind Alpha programs that format in Dayton, and it gets terrible numbers there. I'm waiting for that station to flip; the recent demise of crosstown Classic Country 105.9 WNKN might allow it to escape execution for a while.

There are very few people complaining on their Facebook page about the format change.

Still don’t think a 4,400 watt 106.3 is going to do much damage to a 39,000 watt 93.3. 106.3 doesn’t get out a lot past the Tri Cities.

I find it hilarious that Alpha is boosting that their other 3 stations are in the Top 4 in overall ratings while Z93 placed 3rd. Last book was a fluke IMO as the Cumulus stations have consistently been the top rated 12+ stations.

I'm not even sure which counties Nielsen considers to be in the MSA.

Many of the outlying areas Z93 reaches well won't affect Saginaw / Bay City / Midland ratings much if any. I will say Z93 clearly has a big signal advantage in Midland County over WGER. In Saginaw County, though, WGER might have an edge.
