TV5 Loses second reporter in a week.

Post by AuburnViewer » Tue Aug 02, 2022 9:26 pm

Trevor Sochocki's last day on TV5 was this past Sunday (7/31). He's joining the WFLA News Channel 8 team in Tampa, FL come September.

They are moving up. Not everyone wants to be a Matt and Angie.

Flint’s always been a transitional market. While you’ve had people like Bill Harris, Angie Hendershot, JR Kirtek, and others who had longevity at ABC 12… there have been people like Glenda Lewis, Linsey Davis, Gabe Guitterez and others who have gone on to bigger markets and network.

However, what’s different now is that Allen Media and local management are hiring people who are not ready for Flint. They haven’t gained the needed experience at a smaller market. The stations also aren’t willing to pay good talent. That’s led to a mass exodus of people. Many are just getting out of the business.

It’s already a tough and stressful career. It’s being made worse by producers, reporters, and photographers who aren’t prepared.

Good for Trevor who is getting a great opportunity.

That was expected. Those two weren't from Michigan. People from the state are the only one's who are willingly to stay in that market. There's a reason why Flint and Saginaw are not on the Pure Michigan ads.

Didn't you work for TV12 Under New Management? I'm sure GM/ND would like your ideas along with Byron Allen.

It doesn't matter. They'll find someone else to hold a microphone and stand outside in the dark outside of a building where an important meeting happened SIX HOURS AGO and mumble through something that could have just as easily been said in the studio. And after that person leaves, they'll find another. Wash, rinse, repeat.

Here’s a new concept… how about paying more to keep reporters, producers, photographers, etc. from leaving? It might not stop everyone from pursuing opportunities in bigger markets or jobs closer to home/family… but it would help. Right now all stations are having trouble filling openings. The quality of replacements is also concerning… many of the new hires do not have the same level of professional experience. Broadcast companies are posting record profits in political advertising this year. There’s a major cost to recruit, estimated at about a third of an employee’s yearly salary. There’s also a cost when newsrooms lose the institutional and market history that only comes when you have people who know the market. While not everything can be solved by throwing money at it… this is a very solvable problem.

Bullshit. Zoom interviews are free. And that’s what these companies are doing. The cost of recruiting is a crock of shit in 2022.

Yes, Zoom interviews are free and have basically replaced phone screens. But as I stated above there’s more to recruiting than the interview. There has to be a better solution to running stations on the cheap in order to get a better newscast. Not sure why that’s a revolutionary or controversial idea.

Like what? Job postings on a station website plus Indeed and Linkedn? A day trip to CMU or Lansing? Sure there’s some cost. But it ain’t draining the budget.

You get what you pay for. Quality costs money. ABC 12 has turned into a public access channel. The weekend newscasts are embarrassing. Outsourced weather forecasts where meteorologist call Mio, Mee O.
Take some pride in your investment. People don't have to watch. The world will not end if JR has to work a weekend shift or two.

They should pay JR by the newscast. That might encourage him to be a better team player if his financial well being is tied to him showing up to work.
