Ripping off Tigers fans

Post by Under New Management » Tue Jun 21, 2022 12:01 pm

Once again, when Sinclair has the opportunity to do something good, they f it up.

Sinclair says it has developed an app to allow Tigers fans to watch games without a cable or satellite service.

It is charging customers $20 a month for the service. That’s much more than Disney, Peacock, Netflix and other popular streaming services. People are paying to stream because they are tired of paying outrageous fees for programming!

The price is either $20 per month or $190 for the year. Given that all three Detroit-area teams aren’t winners, it just doesn’t seem worth it. This is another example of how the Sinclair Broadcast Group is a terrible company. They overpaid for the FSN Regionals and when the company initially lost money on that investment, a lot of good employees lost their jobs to make up for it. And now, the consumers are getting stuck with the bill.

UNM:

There are FOUR Detroit teams: Tigers, Lions, Pistons, and Dead Wings.

The Lions aren't on Balley. Plus, they aren't worth mentioning anyhow.

After running its local stations into the ground to fund the purchase of the former Fox Sports Nets, selling the naming rights to Bally’s, and setting outrageous fees for streaming rights, Sinclair is about to call it quits and declare bankruptcy for its regional sports nets.

EVERYTHING Sinclair touches goes to crap.

They paid waaaaaay too much money for those RSNs.

Even if 2020 didn't happen, I'd likely be saying the same thing.

Bally Sports West doesn't have the rights to the Lakers or Dodgers, they have no RSN presence in Boston, no presence in Philly, no presence in New York, no presence in Houston, and no presence in San Francisco. Nearly all of their RSNs are in second and third tier markets where there are only 1 or 2 major league pro teams or where most or all of the major league pro teams suck ass (such as Detroit).

Completely agree with the amount paid. Wasn’t Disney in the talks to by these RSN’s from Fox Sports at one point?

If Sinclair declares bankruptcy, it might be a completely opportune time for the Illitch’s to form their own RSN. They could pick up the rights to broadcast the Pistons, in addition to their own teams, and reap all the financial benefits

Realist: looks like you might be right in the money.

New report says that Sinclair might sell back its regional sports properties to the leagues:

It’s well past time to stop the bleeding. This whole episode just shows how incompetent Sinclair is. They continue to claim that they are one of the most forward looking local broadcasters, yet everything they touch turns to crap.
