High school playoffs on CW 46

Post by sinklair » Sat Jan 23, 2021 1:35 pm

You’d think a station that has branded itself with a digital first approach would take every opportunity to use its website, app, streaming channels, social media, etc to position its local ownership over programming like the state high school football championship.

Alas, but no. The new Shipped In from Out of Town Sinclair GM, the In Over Her Head News Director, the ASSistant GM/Promotions Director, and the Director of Declining Sales all didn’t think to make the live stream available on something other than CW 46’s on air broadcast? People can’t find the games and are pissed.

Plus at a time when we are supposed to find new digital revenue streams, we drop the ball (pun intended) on an event where we have local teams and where local fans can’t attend in person.

Nielsen doesn't measure viewers on the internet stream.
Also ... the station has to have someone insert "stream only" commercials to replace the on-air commercials and this requires additional production equipment and staff. Costly with zero payoff for the station.

Not sure of how all that works other than Fox Sports Detroit (yes, I'm aware they are owned by Sinclair) has had the rights to the finals since what seems like forever. Finding them is no more than a Google search away.

A station GM can't override rights issues.

Storyline (Sinclair’s web content management system) can take our live streams to insert pre- and post-roll video as well as insert local commercials that are trafficked — like we do with our newscasts.

With New Lothrup, Davison and Frankenmuth all in the finals, any sales person worth their spit should be able to easily sell both the broadcast and live streams.

It is a lack of effort and leadership.

Sinclair/FSD has the rights to broadcast. They screwed up the cable and satellite retransmission agreements... now they’ve screwed up the ability for local viewers to see these games thru digital streams — which is supposed to be our thing.

If it were another (real) broadcaster that owned 25-66-46 and Fox Sports Detroit this would have been handled so much better. Local viewers and advertisers are both missing out.

Ratings don’t matter... money does. Regardless of whether Nielsen measures “viewers” on the internet, it can be sold AND tracking users online is way more reliable than Nielsen numbers.
It takes no production equipment at all to air a commercial online. It’s as simple as sending a video clip with a computer.

Sometimes the rules for online broadcast are different than the rules of on air broadcast. Were the games on FSD’s website? If so, they might be the only website allowed to broadcast the games.
Or it might be a complete and total blunder.

Herm: it’s the latter.

If Sinclair can figure out how to get permission to air games on its Flint CW affiliate, they could work through live stream issues.

They didn’t for one simple reason... we are run by idiots. Incompetent idiots. Dumb, incompetent idiots. Brainless, dumb, incompetent idiots. Stupid, brainless, dumb, incompetent idiots... you get the picture.

I don’t think it’s as simple as that. The game is different on air than it is online. Sure, it makes sense to air the games on as many affiliates as you can across the state for several reasons. Online though, it makes sense to limit it to just one or two sites because those sites can be accessed in Marquette and New Lothrop and Grand Rapids and... you see my point. Also, MHSAA TV was streaming the games too and their deal may have involved some exclusivity that might have barred any websites other than FSD’s from streaming the games.
Just speculating here because that’s what we do but, does Sinclair own FSD AND their website? I was looking around and couldn’t find an answer but there doesn’t seem to be any Sinclair or Diamond Sports branding on FSD.com.
It might not be an issue of incompetence. It could just be a business issue.

Herm: yes, Sinclair owns the FSD website and streaming rights. Don’t underestimate the potential of their incompetence.

Are you sure they own the streaming rights to high school sports? That would be odd seeing as how it’s just the championship that they’re streaming and MHSAA Networks seems to stream MHSAA events all year, including this one.

Herm: That could be the case. Depending on cost/amount of money being paid for exclusive broadcast rights for finals, many times the streaming rights are also included. But since I wasn’t part of those talks, I get your point.
