Record FCC Fine for Fox 66 Owner

Post by sinklair » Wed May 06, 2020 11:22 pm

Not that you’ll read this on MidMichigannow.com, but the FCC today fined Fox 66’s owners, Sinclair Broadcasting a record $48-million fine for its attempt to purchase Tribune stations.

This is just the latest run-in for Sinclair, which was fined $13-million in 2017 for running advertising in the form of news stories in newscasts... and $24-million in 2007 for violating children’s programming rules.

It also comes on the heel of Sinclair favorite sidecar owner Armstrong Williams being fined by the Republican controlled FCC $100k for not negotiating retransmission carriage rights with AT&T/DirecTV.

Not sure why the FCC just doesn’t break up Sinclair and company. It’s clear they don’t follow the rules and don’t serve the public interest.

A record FCC fine is newsworthy, but you won’t find it on NBC 25, Fox 66 or CW 46.

And the impact of the fines will no doubt impact local stations. I might suggest if they look at saving money that they don’t replace the dearly departed accountant in chief, and let go the ASSistant GM, the Director of Declining Sales, the In Over Her Head News Director and the HR Director/Party Planner. Time to clear house and save David Smith some cash! You don’t need to have ineffective local management when you have idiots at the top of the corporate ladder running stations into the ground.

Sinclair and most of the other big broadcasters (iHeart in particular) is another "Ma Bell" waiting to happen.

Because larger companies bring in a much bigger payday for fines...

You wouldn't see Tribune fined $48 million.

The fine probably also represents the seriousness of the infraction... as well as Sinclair’s past run ins with the FCC

Sinclair wasn't fine in 2007 that was Univision that was fine $24Million. I knew that Sinclair was going to get fine I didn't think that they were going to lose the TV station licenses.
