Flint Nielsen Radio Ratings - Ages 12+

Post by MWmetalhead » Fri Aug 02, 2019 7:20 pm

Very solid book for Cars 108 and 103.9 The Fox.

Mediocre book for Gnash FM, who continues to underachieve severely.

Terrible book for WHNN, although my guess is Cumulus makes zero effort to sell that signal in the Flint market these days.

There's no reason why the Flint COL stations can't be #1 #2 #3 and #4, except for the Formats. The other outlying signals are so far down that you really have to fiddle around on most radios to get them. Did Cumulus ever think that WHNN might lose to WCRZ altogether if they adopted a similar format? WRSR has taken up the slack some with the Classic Rock. I'd love to see what would happen if a Flint AM station, with an FM translator doing a Format like MeTV FM, like WJMK is doing in Saginaw, could do in the ratings. WRME is still hanging in there in Chicago, with their Franken FM, tied with and ahead of some middle dial FMs and legacy AMs. Haven't seen what they are doing in Saginaw with that Format.
.
I don't know if MeTV FM plans to fine tune the syndicated stations to their markets. For SE Michigan, you might want to play Michigan Regional Hits and not just Chicago Regional Hits, and plenty of mellower R $ B Hits (not JUST Motown), and MELLOWER AOR leaning Top 40 tracks. Thats what WGVU and WCXI do, but much is TOO obscure, and the "juke box" needs some voice tracked live simulation with some legacy DJs.

My guess is Cumulus wants its Tri-Cities stations to sell to Tri-Cities clients and its Genesee County stations to sell to Genesee County clients.

As such, I suspect Cumulus doesn't care how terribly WHNN performs in the Flint market these days.

Quite remarkable that a Class A signal from 14 miles away pulls more than double the 12+ AQH share of Gnash FM 95.1. 105.5 & 95.1 would perform much better, I suspect, if someone else owned them.

If it were up to me, I'd flip 105.5 to Classic Hits and allow 102.5 WIOG to target advertisers throughout the entire mid-Michigan region once again.

CHR is such a waste on WWCK given WIOG's coverage area. WIOG would easily climb to a 6 or 7 share in Flint if WWCK flipped to anything else - only loss of listeners would be the few south of Flint who defect to WKQI.

I would simulcast WKQZ (Z-93) on 105.5.

Love that idea. I can get 105.5 and 102.5 fairly well here, but Z93 hardly, if ever, comes in. I'd love to have another option on the dial for rock programming here.

Yes, it would take quite a good antenna and receiver to get WKQZ near Brighton, with WHMI nearby. What direction is WHMI from you? WRCI 93.5 Midland was the 3 kW predecessor of WKQZ 93.3. That would have been really difficult to receive.

If you are at high unobstructed elevation in many areas of Livingston County, you can get a lot of Radio and TV signals. You need an directional antenna and selective receiver to sort them all out.

In the old days of radio and TV, some stations reportedly wanted to put their transmitters there, to reach Detroit, Flint, Tri Cities, Ann Arbor Ypsilanti, and Lansing East Lansing, maybe even Jackson.

WHMI is roughly 7-10 miles from where I live. It's literally a 10-15 minute drive up Grand River.

Man, is that a slow drive in the morning from the Brighton Hotels to Cleary College!

You go by the studios I think. The tower there is an STL. The 93.5 tower is near Oak Grove and Marr Roads.

The old WHMI 1350 tower is/was at a third location, 1.8 miles West of Howell, at 3800 Mason Rd.

Well, the studios are 7-10 miles north of here. I'd have to take a look see in the area you provided for the actual TX site. My work is in the Grand River/Bendix area. I get many Lansing signals here too, so it isn't a complete waste.

And yes, the 3 stoplights between Cross Street and Challis are a MAJOR pain in the ass!!!

Unless you get to the Cleary Campus 20-30 minutes early, there are NO parking spots at all at 8 AM. I've been late to my Seminars trying to squeeze in somewhere. I was there in plenty of time otherwise. It's totally inadequate.
