Retro TV on WLLA 64

Post by Jason Kragt » Mon Jul 17, 2023 10:17 pm

Does anyone know what happened? They have a constant screen message saying that Retro TV has been removed due to inappropriate commercial content. Their Facebook page suggests that they didn't like some of the national advertisers of Retro TV's late-night programming.

I looked at their web page (wlla.tv) for more info. Their home page is nothing more than a slide show with one slide being the channel 64 logo and the other slide being an advertisement for Federal 12-gauge ammunition. No, I'm not making that up!

So ammunition ads are appropriate but boner pills (or whatever else ruffled their feathers) are not?

I used to be a fan of channel 64 because they bring quite a few subchannels to this market. Are they going to remove them all now for not passing their purity test?

Does Retro TV show infomercials during late night? If so, maybe the "inappropriate commercial content" may be in the form of late night infomercials for "male enhancing" products or 1-900 dating ads (are those still around anymore?).

WLLA could have done what cable systems do by running their own infomercials during Retro TV's infomercial time. But apparently, WLLA thought it was best to take down the whole channel out of fear that a Viagra knockoff may be sold during an old episode of the NBC soap The Doctors.

Someone at 64 seems to have an obsession with the cheesy Svengoolie show. It's almost the only topic ever mentioned on their FB page.

Svengoolie is on MeTv, but Retro TV has its own horror host, can't remember the guy's name.

Is that the actual slide being shown on TV? It looks like it was made in MS Paint!

Even WADL Detroit's old technical difficulties slide was 10 times better than that eyesore!

It always baffled me why MeTV is on a subchannel of a high-number religious independent station in a semi-major market like Grand Rapids. There are high number MeTV stations in larger markets, but they're usually owned by Weigel, and usually have MeTV on the .1 channel.

WLLA brought MeTV to West Michigan quite some time ago, (a decade plus) I think RetroTV was the only other non-religious channel they offered and it was 64.3 then.

As to their technical/graphic capabilities, the OTA signal clicks out on the order of every ten days, for several hours at a time. I got stiffed on viewing a good "Leave It to Beaver" Monday morning (Beaver and Larry start a neighborhood newspaper, Wally owns the typewriter, a struggle ensues) since they were down, and had been since overnight hours.

I hope this gets sorted out soon, I like having the ability to see "Disasters of the Century" if the mood strikes me.

Whatever misgivings there had been, The Saint is on 64.5 now, and in Color!

Maybe Disasters of the Century will be on tonight but I won’t press.
