New market manager for Cumulus GR named

Post by MWmetalhead » Tue Aug 02, 2022 1:00 pm

Bruce Law quietly exited in January of this year.

Will be interesting to see if any dead weight gets canned now that someone new is in charge.

The press release makes no mention of The Q 94-5 (WKLQ). Was that omission intentional? I mean, how do you just flat out forget about a 50 kW FM signal?!!!

They better not kill the Q… that’s one of the few stations I listen to when I’m out that way.

I hope that this new market manager has the authority to dump "Blunder Country" and put something better on the
50,000 watt 107.3 FM. I've suggested some format changes and GR needs a format change on the radio badly. I don't
know if he'll just rubber stamp the continued insane idea of Cumulus thinking they can beat B-93 with the modern major
label country hits or if he's a reasonable man that realizes big corporations in distant cities don't usually understand the
local markets they claim to serve such as Grand Rapids. Either way they'll never beat B-93 so now's the time to put a new
format on 107.3 FM or else sell the station and hopefully to somebody from Michigan and not a big corporation from a
distant city.

I think 107.3 should consider playing fart sounds non-stop. I bet that programming would earn better numbers than the current programming!

Were you listening this morning? It was pretty close to that. It sounded like 3, or more audio elements were playing simultaneously. It happened multiple times in the 8a & 9a hours. What a mess. Is ANYONE paying attention locally?

Could Cumulus swap the formats of 105.3 and 107.3?

I don't think it would do much good. Blunder would be at an even greater signal disadvantage to B93 in the immediate Grand Rapids area.

As far as Hot FM goes, much of its target audience does not have a preset programmed for 107.3 FM, as over the past couple decades, 105.3 has generally been a girlie station and 107.3 a testosterone-laden station (first KLQ, then BBL). A move to 107.3 would put 105.3 at risk of significant cume loss, just like what happened to WTNR when it moved from 94.5 to 107.3.

Of course, in WTNR's case, the flunkies at Cumulus did a TERRIBLE job advising listeners to reset their presets from 94.5 to 107.3 during the two or three week simulcast period that took place.

105.3 is capable of generating good numbers with CHR/Pop when programmed properly, as was the case in 2015. It has been sounding a bit better from a music standpoint lately. The national cancellation of the Zach Sang show at night perhaps has helped a bit, too.

What’s your suggestion for them to put on 107.3 besides country, Mark?

I'd keep it country but would adopt a gold-heavy playlist that features a lot of material from the 90's & 00's, a few select cuts that are even older, and a small number of currents & recurrents. I'd ditch the national morning show and go local (doesn't necessarily have to be a "show," per se).

Throw all music from Dan + Shay, Florida Georgia Line, Niko Moon and similar artists into the trash can!

In terms of non-country formats, Urban AC would be my first choice. Variety Hits would be my very distant second choice.

For 107.3, I would play some artists from the Texas Red Dirt Music.

Popular artists: Cody Jinks, Randall King, Randy Rogers Band, Whiskey Myers,
Cody Johnson, Turnpike Troubadours, Josh Abbott Band, Flatland Cavarly,
Casey Donahew, Jon Wolfe. Reckless Kelly, to name a few.

There are a few stations, that is all they play is Texas Red Dirt Music.

For 107.3, get rid of bro-country and boyfriend country artists.

I would play a mix of country from the 80's.90's and 00's. and what is popular today.
Toss in some Texas Red Dirt Music.
Keep it more traditional country (steel guitar, fiddles, in the music)
Not this crap music today that uses EDM, snap beats.

Bruce Law has to be a fairly old guy by now. I remember when he owned WBNZ in Frankfort for a minute. That has to be 40 or more years ago.
