Don’t get me wrong … I love that they picked Ellen and her promotion is well deserved but WOOD TV is saying Ellen is the first female chief meteorologist In west Michigan which is inaccurate. Pam Land was Chief Meteorologist at WOTV in the mid to late 90s and early 2000s when they had a news department.

Was she a certified meteorologist and actually given that title? I am unsure.

I do remember her; it's a good question.

I wonder if Matt Kirkwood was even considered for being Chief Meteorologist.
I believe he been at Channel 8 for 23 years.

Meanwhile WZZM still has an opening for meteorologist. Been open for a couple months now.

Yes, that was me. I said multiple times "it will be Ellen and it will be soon." Worst kept secret in the market, besides Mike and Deanna's departure at 17...that is.

Not sure why people equate longevity to promotion? That's like saying a seasoned actor/actress should get the lead over some young up and comer because "they've been in Hollywood longer". By all accounts Matt is a great guy, but the next time I hear someone say he is must watch meteorology...will be the first time.

He is Chief Meteorologist Emeritus, according to the station. He will cover weekend evenings and nights, along with some special features.

I am glad Bill chose to scale back gracefully. I was afraid that the transition would be left until they closed his coffin lid.

I heard the anchor say "Chief" when introducing Ellen last night at 10 pm and thought I was hearing things. I thought it was strange they didn't identify her with an onscreen graphic. Congratulations Ellen!

P.S. Does this mean Bill's basement is gone forever. My wife would be so disappointed.

Hands down the best TV meteorology crew in the state.

ZZM, despite being down a person, is also darn good.

WXMI has lost some good people lately, and I haven't watched WWMT enough in recent years to form an opinion.

Congrats Ellen on being named chief met. WWMT future models aren't that good when storms are coming until there live on radar from watching sometimes they show future cast.
