Super Q - Whitehall in the late 70's.

Post by iwndry1015 » Thu Jul 15, 2021 2:03 pm

Does anyone remember a tiny station that operated out of a small former house somewhere in Whitehall in the late 70's? As I remember, one or two of the jocks went on to work at WMUS.

The Little White House and its (now) 400+ foot 1490-AM tower still stand at the corner of Blank Rd. and White Lake Dr. just South of John Alan’s WAXT-LPFM 98.9.

Super Q in Whitehall. I know lots about Super Q in Whitehall. I was the program director there from 1974-78. We had a tight sounding little station with lots of talented on air people. Including the aformentioned John Alan who did the evening shift and was also the Chief engineer. Daniel Boone aka Dan Mason was the assistant PD and worked the morning shift. Other jocks on Super Q included Rick Lambert (who later was the PD at KLOL in Houston), Dennis Cavender, John Beyrle (the same John Beyrle who was the United States Ambassador to Russia under President Bush II and Barrack Obama), Chris Roberts, Marty Hembre and several others. Amongst that crowd, John Alan, Dan Mason, Chris Roberts and Dennis Cavender all eventually went to work at WMUS. John Alan passed away in 2015, Dan Mason is in Reno, Nevada where he is the operations manager of a 50,000 watt AM talk station, Chris Robers is retired, and the last I knew Dennis was working for a non-commercial religious station in the Traverse City area. Super Q was a fun little radio station to work at and program, but unfortunately the owner, the late Ralph Trieger from Chicago had no money to run a competitive radio station and sold it to Regional broadcasting (WGRD/WTRU) in 1978.

originalzzmfmjock,

Q-Man, who did some on-air work at Super Q, also went on to WMUS, right?

That is correct, Jim Curcuru (aka The Q Man) did mornings for awhile and also worked at MUS. He moved from on air to sales at Super Q and I believe he was involved mostly in sales at MUS also.

As a young aspiring DJ, I became friend with John Berry (sp). He also had great aspirations as a DJ. Anyone happen to know how far he went in the business?

I was long gone before it was ZZR. By that time I was working at GRD. As for John Barry, I worked with John at Super Q in 77-78. Our paths crossed again at WLAV in 1979. I last saw John about 5 years ago at a radio luncheon in GR. He is alive and well, but no longer working in the radio business.

The Super Q fire happened on a Sunday evening on Feb 26, 1978. The production studio was totally destroyed. All production records and tapes were destroyed. Even the master Super Q jingles were destroyed. The main studio had extensive damage.
The main board, cart machines, and turntables were fried. Jingles, spots, music, and John Driscoll's (WCFL) voice imaging for Super Q were destroyed. Even the Classic Super Q Top of the hour ID which featured Rick Donohue's (WGRD) was baked. Most of the 45's and Albums in the main studio were salvaged.
The staff of the last full week of broadcasting prior to the fire.
GM Kevin Driscoll
PD Bob Mason
Sales Mgr Rob Kosnik and salesman Dave.
Everything office was Dori A.
Airstaff: John Barry 6-noon, Jim O'Bryan noon-6 and Chris Roberts 6-midnight. Super Q was not 24 hours.
Weekends and fill in was Bob "maniac" Simonson.

Very accurate description of the last days of Super Q as I knew it. After that fire it was on to bigger and better things. Thanks for the memories.
