I worked at WLAV-AM in the summer of 1979 and it was already a throw away AM at that point. Extremely low ratings and no clue of how to program the AM station successfully. I only stayed there for about 4 months, cause I didn't think the station was really worth the effort. Left LAV-AM to go to work for WGRD-FM.

Did 1340 have any semblance of traction when it flipped to Solid Gold for a few years in the 80s?

Of course, the instant 93.7 flipped to Classic Hits, I suspect the viability of KOOL 1340 was destroyed.

1340 was Z rock for a while. That was an interesting experiment.

1340 AM struggled in the 2000s with Bret Bakita, but (name removed by request) developed a strong niche sports following on his afternoon show. Then the station went to a talk format around 2009. It wasn't very good although the local news was the best in the state for a number of years until the entire staff seemed to disappear a few years ago.

Now WBBL is back to square one again at 1340 plus its 106.1 peashooter.
