These numbers suggest to me young and middle aged male listeners and young female listeners are abandoning FM radio in droves - or at least spending a lot less time with the medium than they once did.

Many stations more likely to perform well with the younger half of the 25-54 segment posted weak numbers - WGRD, WSNX, WHTS.

Are the so-called WTNR numbers for 94.5 or 107.3? If those are the numbers for 107.3, then the relocation of the country format is an unmitigated disaster!!! 94.5 had a 4.1 share in its second to last book as a Country station. Now, if that 1.8 share is for The Q, then that isn't horrible (yet) since AAA stations are usually a slow build ratings wise.

Surprising to see that 96.1 has made virtually no gains following the relegation of WBBL to AM 1340 and 106.1 FM.

How pitiful is it that 101.3 WBFX is barely generating more in the way of 12+ AQH share than 89.3 WGNB and is now *tied* with 88.5 WGVU-FM?!?!

Most likely the case. I hardly listen to terrestrial radio anymore. Much of what is played isn't relevant to me and I'm sure it's the same the most of those listeners who abandoned FM radio. I think the majority are into niche programming and streaming what they like on their phones while in the car or even playing their own CD's and mp3's because FM just isn't gonna play what you are into.

It amazes me no one in the market has tried rhythmic hits with a strong 90's and early 00's lean.

So this has seriously confused me as well. The WTNR 1.8 would be at the 107.3 frequency because WBBL FM no longer shows.
That leaves the AAA format at 94.5 as WKLQ TOTALLY missing from the book it SEEMS. Right? Hard to believe because there is certainly enough interest in the station for it to SHOW UP even with a 0.1.... but I dont see it anywhere.

Hopefully somebody can clear this up.

Can't even tell you how much I wish that would have happened with 94.5. Or straight up 80's classic hits, no 70s.

“These numbers suggest to me young and middle aged male listeners and young female listeners are abandoning FM radio in droves - or at least spending a lot less time with the medium than they once did.”

Data from the likes of Nielsen and Jacobs media support your latter statement. Given the number of media platforms available, loyalty to any station is tough these days. But these seem two sources also suggest young and middle-aged listeners are still regularly listening to FM — maybe for not as long, but they are still listening. If radio got better at delivering compelling content from personalities who cared, we might just see a resurgence of interest.

BTW, check out what is winning, at least for now.

WCSG can’t be overlooked... they consistently put in by far the most effort into their radio station than anyone else and it shows. In the age of declining radio quality, WCSG has stayed the course and it seems to be paying off quite well.

As someone in their 30's... I can attest 98% of commercial FM/AM radio offers me nothing and no reason to listen. The only thing I find myself listening to on a regular basis is Local NPR affiliates (with local/national news and informational programming) and occasionally something random on AM on long drives at night. Listening to pre-recorded voicetracks and piped in playlists has no appeal to me in any daypart - and very little to anyone else either.

Give me a good reason for anyone under the age of 40 or 50 to listen... and having an FM radio in the car isn't a good answer.

As a late 20's year old something, The only radio station I actively listen to is 94.5, I listen to News/talk or my phone the rest of the time.

Could be wrong, but since 94.5 adopted the WKLQ call letters (well, readopted) on February 6 and 107.3 adopted the WTNR calls on February 13, both well before the start of the spring book, it would appear that someone forgot to update Nielsen. Or Nielsen screwed up.

My guess is Cumulus fucked up. Their transition of Blunder from 94.5 to 107.3 was botched, and LAV's tower move has been massively botched.

You have to realize is that the 94.5 and 107.3 towers are close to 35 miles apart. That's like the distance from Lansing to Jackson or Flint to Saginaw. The milieu of signals is different.

What happened to WNWZ and its translator? Novelty wore off? FM Translator Transmitter at low power?

Is THAT where they got the idea for the 486-SX?

Same (x, y, z), different (t)

You're right. Cumulus traded a city grade signal over virtually all of Ottawa County (a county with over 250,000 residents and a Nielsen MSA county) for city grade signals over sparsely populated rural counties that are not even part of the Nielsen MSA!

Not to mention - there was an advantage to being next to B93 on the FM dial. 94.5 is the natural P2 station for B93 P1's. Now, instead of hitting the seek button once or at most twice, B93 listeners who want to check out the "other" station will have to try to remember the preset button used for 107.3.

That brings me to my next point - at NO POINT during the short-lived 94.5 & 107.3 simulcast did Thunder's staff or V/O announcer instruct 94.5's listeners to "reset their preset" to 107.3!!! That point should've been hammered home repeatedly! This is completely inexcusable, and quite frankly, should've resulted in the termination of employment for the key decision maker here (not sure if that would be Bruce Law or Lori Bennett).

Right now, 94.5 is Cumulus' best signal in terms of number of listeners within 70 dBu signal range. To waste that signal penetration strength on a niche format such as AAA just strikes me as stupid. Don't get me wrong, I kinda like what Cumulus is doing by introducing a AAA to the market, but that format should've been placed elsewhere (i.e. 105.3 or 107.3).

Thunder should've only been booted from 94.5 if a replacement format was waiting in the wings that had the potential to generate stronger ratings and especially stronger billing than Thunder. AAA sure as hell isn't such a format! CHR/Pop (with stronger air talent and a complete rebrand from the current 105.3) or Throwback Hip-Hop and R&B arguably would've been the only two uses of the 94.5 MHz stick more worthy than the Country format.

I'll repeat what I said earlier - last autumn, 94.5 scored a 4.1 share! The formatics sounded rock solid. Why blow all that up with an unneeded restoration of the "Thunder" brand and creating a bunch of listener confusion? Stupid, stupid, STUPID!!!
