Federal courts below the Supreme Court have said adamantly that Michigan's lines are among the worst cases of gerrymandering observed.

The U.S. Supreme Court basically punted, with the majority opinion stating the court has no jurisdiction over such matters. I'm oversimplifying the opinion, but that essentially was the ruling...that this is a matter to be resolved at the state level.
What did that do for the independent commission we voted in? Did that get axed?

Zero bearing. There are special interest groups who have filed suits against the commission, but those are distinct & separate from the Supreme Court ruling.

The individuals to serve on the commission have already been selected and confirmed. In fact, that all occurred within the past 60 days.

I personally think it is a good law that will lead to fairer districts where elected leaders can serve their constituents more effectively. Because more seats should be "in play" going forward, I think this will also lead to a broader range of candidates with impressive credentials.

Good I was afraid they had struck all of that down too. I actually ran into a guy collecting signatures outside an SOS while waiting in a H*** line before the place opened. Pretty smart way to get them. I signed and voted for it.

The Republicans in the legislature have no intention of doing ANYTHING. Put that in your pipe and smoke it.
