The Detroit News had a really nice write up on his retirement… apparently 7 offered him another year and he declined. I also didn’t realize he was 66:

I'm glad he declined.

Now the question is who replaces him and there aren’t exactly a lot of in house options…
Brian Able
Keenan Smith
Mike Duffy
Brad Galli
None of them fit the lead anchor bill.

Mike Duffy has the job in the interim, he's a good guy and popular in the newsroom.

And I like him on air too… for the limited on-air experience he has (3 years anchor/reporting in Sacramento) he’s really good as an anchor if maybe a bit generic but that might fade over time. The rest of his resume is 18 years of producer/writer stuff including a lengthy stint at CNN.

Duffy is a bit stiff, but is the only one with a refreshing look and some authenticity.
Newsroom popularity should have nothing to do with it. They need someone who pops. He is the closest thing to it, outside of bringing in someone new.

That’s probably the sticking point for me… 7’s style isn’t stiff… if this were WLS he would fit in a little better. Hopefully they soften him up a bit as he gets more comfortable.

Duffy is now being advertised alongside the rest of the evening talent complete with the obligatory everybody standing together downtown shots. So it looks like it’s either a permanent arrangement or a long term one.

In other local news personnel movement, Fox 2's News Director Kevin Roseborough announced his imminent retirement, he is expected to be replaced by Assistant News Director Laura Moore. Ameera David Weekend Anchor at channel 7 has resigned and given notice due to her husband being transferred out of state.

At this rate by next year 6 months will make someone a senior employee…

I liked Ameera David's work; easy on the eyes, too.

She got much better (as did the producing on the weekends overall that had been so weak for so long) as time went on… when she first started her delivery and writing had serious issues. She wasn’t Smita Kalohke but we were heading that direction. 7 seems to hire works in progress and coach them up. Not a bad strategy from a cost perspective really…
