CW 50 co-channel interference?

Post by Marcus » Sun Jan 01, 2023 11:33 am

Last night I had trouble keeping a solid signal on WKBD-TV which is RF 34. According to Rabbitears.info there is another RF 34 in Chatham, ON. Could that be the reason it kept dropping out?

Never heard of a low power near Chatham on rf34 up and running.....
Maybe it was a bit of tropo fighting WKBD???
But CW50 is the flakiest signal I receive even with an outdoor ant.
Now Im using an indoor ant and get every full power But CW50 and WPXD Ion on rf24.

Hard to believe there'd be another RF-34 that close, but I certainly see it on the list. I've never picked it up.

What kind of antenna are you using? Seems like from Sarnia the two are quite a spread apart (nearly 90 degrees) where you could adjust even a simple dipole to drop CICO into the abyss

It's a Televes Ellipse Mix U/V Antenna. There are many days where all the full powered Detroit broadcasts including Ion (31) and CW 50 come in. Last night I picked up Toledo, so tropo ducting was a factor. There are times when the LPTV's from Detroit come in, but not often. Overall it is a good antenna trying to deal with a crowded band and a poorly modulated system (ATSC 1.0). Total number of stations on a normal day are close to 60 including sub channels.

WKBD and WPXD are atop the candelabra on the 11 Mile Road tower; must be something between those antennas and yours affecting both those signals.

The Farmington Hills / Southfield border to Windsor is a long poke when it comes to HDTV reception. Depending on windsor's precise location, there are potentially a lot of manmade obstacles in the path of his place of residence versus the WKBD / WPXD tower. Multi-path (when signals reflect off buildings and hills) is the enemy to good TV reception, especially in the digital era.

WPXD has a significant null in its radiation pattern to the due east, where ERP is only ~44 kW (compared to the licensed ERP maximum of 370 kW). About 60 kW get sent in my direction, and I sometimes have shaky OTA reception of WPXD, even though I live maybe 8 miles from the tower.

WKBD's pattern also has a significant null, but its null primarily affects viewers located west, northwest, and north of the tower site.

Last night there was a lot of tropospheric enhancement in the region - very likely something else on RF34 was trying to wipe out WKBD.

I was listening to WQKL 107.1 Ann Arbor and kept getting WSAQ Port Huron, despite being less than 15 miles from WQKL's TX.

My best guess would be W34FP, a PBS translator serving far NE Ohio.

Either Chatham, ON or Eastlake, OH is a reasonable possibility. When there was tropospheric ducting over Lake Erie, analog signals from Ohio would often overwhelm TV and FM stations in SE Michigan, and extreme cochannel lines and whines on WNEM from WEWS, WJRT from WICU Erie, PA, and WEYI from WVIZ, particularly on the far side of higher terrain areas stretching from Brighton to Armada. Cleveland and Detroit were too close for cochannel TV stations, as allotments were generally grouped with 2 4 5 7 9 11 13 and 3 6 8 10 12 together.

Cochannel FMs in Cleveland are often problematic even just outside the city grade signals of Detroit FMs under these conditions. Instead of the lines, we now see pixelation and complete signal wipe outs in shadow areas because of the crystal clear but often problematic fragile digital TV signals.

Given the direction of my reception, I'm going to guess Chatham.
