WWJ - Jonathan Carlson
Where is Jonathan Carlson from, exactly? So far, the guy seems like a decent news anchor, but can't correctly pronounce:
Monroe
Sault Sainte Marie
"Vernor" Highway
and a couple others I can't recall at the moment...I would swear I heard him say "Mack-in-nac" the other morning. Hearing that made me miss the great Florence Walton. Someone needs to fax Jonathan one of those old AAA Michigan pronunciation guides. Don't get me wrong, I want to like this guy. It was equally cringe worthy to repeatedly hear Jason Scott refer to the late John O'Leary as John O'Hurley.
I would bet a lot of the Lunacy staffers have their car radios welded to NPR. To a casual observer, it certainly sounds that way.

He worked at Channel 7 for several years before WWJ, so he's not a newbie to Detroit. I'm not sure where he's from natively.

We can rule out "SALT Saint Marie" or "Mahn-Row"ZenithCKLW wrote: ↑Fri Jun 10, 2022 10:48 amHe worked at Channel 7 for several years before WWJ, so he's not a newbie to Detroit. I'm not sure where he's from natively.

You're most likely right, LOL. Hope he doesn't say grey-shit.
Re: WWJ - Jonathan Carlson
Carlson grew up on Long Island, NY. The dude is too lazy to make an effort to learn local pronunciations but loves his Culvers.

"Brown-Town Township" Really...
Heard that one a minute ago.
To me, at times, Carlson sounds bored, checked out, and uninspired by the job. Sleepy Tom Jordan sounded bright eyed and bushy tailed compared to this guy.

In his defense, 5 hours is an exhausting air shift. Impossible to keep the energy always up. Also, the anchors are reading scripts cold.. and the writing is piss poor. Not his fault. He also runs the audio board, plays commercials, keeps logs etc while reading at the same time. Not an easy task.

Like the new people that aren't from MI that work up north... Onekama, Cheboygan, Mackinac Island, etc... Mark Watkins (7&4) was learning pronunciations during commercial breaks his first few days on air.
