Should Rhythmic AC get another shot in the D?

Post by Deleted User 15835 » Mon Apr 24, 2023 8:07 pm

So, 106.7 The Beat Of Detroit is a distant memory now but besides Varity hits, I do see a hole for a format similar to what The Beat was. I always thought it was kind of a fun station to listen to, as it was different from a lot of other stuff on the dial. Something other than rap and moldy crust bucket classic rock.

I recall when they signed on, I was actually in Sandusky Ohio the day they came on and found the station on my way home. It wasn't something I could listen to all day but at certain times of the day, I liked it.

The playlist looked something like-

Techtonic- Pump up the jam
Dee-lite-Grove is in the heart
Jermaine Stewart-We don't have to take our clothes off
Montel Jordan-This is how we do it
Power station(I think)- Bang a gong
Taylor Dane-Tell it to my heart
Dj Jazzy Jeff/Fresh Prince-Summertime
Ini Kamozie-Here comes the hotstepper
Snow-Informer
Madonna-Express yourself
Kelly Clarkston-Since you've been gone.

Maybe Resurrect WDRQ  for a 3rd run or flip Alt 98.7.

I would personally love to see it. So many great songs that have no outlet other than looking a random song up on YouTube.

Snow - Informer invariably gets selected as a karaoke song at our local pub every Saturday night. And invariably, the singer fails miserably! :rollin

Maybe Detroit will gets it's own version of what WBBM-FM (96.3) Chicago became just a few days ago.

What does gold-leaning Top 40 even mean?
Top 40 is supposed to mean playing the current hits

Think of the top 10 songs on the CHR chart in 2011. Those would get mixed in with current product.

Okay, so what Channel 955 is doing now.
It seems to be working great based on their 8.3 share

My wife was telling me they were playing less garbage lately. I should check them out.

A format like that, or something along the lines of WKTU in New York, might be good for 96.3, which has been struggling to stay relevant. I know I'd listen.

As for 93.1, I'd move it to the Country equivalent of that format, something like Star Country up north. '90s/'00s base, carefully selected currents (i.e. Lainey Wilson yes, Sam Hunt no).

I also wouldn't mind seeing a softer version of Rhythmic AC along the lines of what 94-7 The Wave does in L.A. I would have liked to see V98.7 do what KTWV did and evolve from Smooth Jazz into that direction instead of flipping outright. A playlist like this on 98.7 could take from both WNIC and Mix 92.3. The Breeze sort of leaned in this direction for a hot minute.

I wouldn't mind a rhythmic AC station again in Detroit.

I'd flip 93.1 to a gold-leaning country station as well, with only new country that sounds country instead of the bro-country acts with trap beats.

I like the playlist 94.7 the Wave has. I'll have to check it out sometime. If only they kept the V98.7 branding but shifted the playlist to a softer Rhythmic AC. I have a feeling if 98.7 flips someday, it won't be that nor a Breeze revival, but WWJ-FM simulcasting 950's news format.

I'd love to have a Wave clone here. They are one of a kind -- glad Audacy hasn't fucked it up.

I have one wish that I know won't come true -- for Cumulus to give us The Q 93.1 :hat

Or bring back DRQ. Either one works for me. Still missing the Beat.

What KTU is doing is a minor tweak for WDVD and would be the perfect evolution for them. They have an age appropriate air staff already in place.
Adjust the branding and go.
Seeing how obvious that is, means Cumulus of course will never do it :lol

KTU is custom made for NYC and has a significant Hispanic component (especially Puerto Rican) to its listenership. I am highly skeptical a similar station could work here.

A better approach would be something akin to what Hot 97.5 / 103.9 is doing in Phoenix.

Edit - I retract that first paragraph. I just tuned into KTU online. WKTU sounds much different than I remember! It sounds more mainstream and less dance oriented than it once did. They've made major adjustments, perhaps to thwart 94.7 The Block. A similar sound might work here although I like the playlist of the Phoenix station a bit better.

WDVD does bore me. I cannot stand Adam Bomb at night. The stationality is sterile.
Morgan Wallen is a piece of garbage.
