This TV 4.2 OTA

Post by BillT » Mon Jan 10, 2022 12:30 pm

This subchannel used to show movies. Anyone know why it switched and if it's permanent?

They are showing one of those Judge shows right now.
Tonight, they are showing The Wraith.

They still have plenty of movies, you just have to find the right time.

Here's there whole schedule:

Seems like most of the movies start after the 4PM hour though.

The programming changes are due to Byron Allen's "Entertainment Studios" acquiring the network from its prior owner, who I believe is MGM.

He is dumping a bunch of his third rate garbage programming onto the network, sadly.

So, yes, the changes are permanent.

Is it me or do these channels turn a perfectly good 2 hr movie to a 3 hr marathon?

I long for the good old days of limited ads per hour.

Not much different than any of the OTAs where they turn a 20 minute sitcom into a 30 min infomercial.

Don't forget that the WHNE Drive In channel (3.6) on plays classic movies without any interruptions. Commercials are played between the movies.

Here's their list of movies for today. Not one I recognize, but maybe a few are worth watching:

4:00 PM James Dean
Stephen McHattie portrays the film rebel (1931-1955). Michael Brandon, Meg Foster, Candy Clark, Dane Clark.
6:00 PM The Woman in Green
A maniacal killer is on the loose. Basil Rathbone, Henry Daniell, Nigel Bruce, Tom Bryson, Hillary Brooke, Paul Cavanagh.
7:30 PM Jungle Queen
Adventures of Lothel, Queen of the Jungle, in a 1945 serial set in World War II Africa.
8:00 PM The Devil Diamond
A youth (Frankie Darro) tries to thwart crooks after a gem. Kane Richmond, June Gale, Poverty-row production.
9:30 PM AV Club
10:00 PM Mr. Sycamore
A mailman (Jason Robards) escapes from both his job and wife. Sandy Dennis, Jean Simmons, Robert Easton, Mark Miller, Richard Bull.
12:00 AM Edgar Kennedy Short
12:30 AM Police Rookie
A policeman goes after the gang who murdered his father. Gordon Jones, Joyce Compton, J. Farrell MacDonald, Craig Reynolds.

A DA prosecutes three teenage killers. Burt Lancaster, Dina Merrill, Shelley Winters, Edward Andrews, Telly Savalas.

The WHNETV.COM web site has the complete schedule for all WHNE channels and ALL of the local Detroit TV stations right on the home page.

It can be changed to check different days and times with a pull-down menu. I've never seen anyone post this before, but it's been available for several years.

Some cable channels like to take those "feel-good" half-hour sitcoms and toss in an extra 6-7 minutes of ads per episode. They figure you won't notice or care much if that favorite scene is coming up that they're running 5+ minutes of ads every other break.

WHNE-LD has been operating from its Oak Park location since 2014. Was on Virtual 14 (RF20) until last repack. Now on low VHF3 (Virtual and RF) since spring 2020. Low power 3 kW on low VHF makes for difficult reception for many in metro area. Too bad, as they're Michigan owned, and seem to want to provide some fun viewing alternatives, like the Drive-in Movie channel, and NewsNet, the lowest budget news network ever.
Earlier history & info can be gotten from the usual interwebs search facilities.

Looking at the coverage maps, WHNE has a bigger coverage area now than when they were RF channel 20. They've had posts on FB after the repack claiming that most of the reception issues are caused by viewers not having antennas that will receive low vhf signal. The station signal is covering the area, but if your antenna doesn't pick up low vhf, you won't see it unless you live close to Oak Park.

People always want to blame the TV station because their home antennas are the best and greatest, but they really aren't!

Those "Flying Saucer" 360 degree antennas neither tune up for 54-88 well, nor do they solve some multipath and other interference issues. Even the small mini dishes don't tune 2-6, just 7-13. Get a directional antenna for 2-6. Sometimes amplifiers just add noise, so you might want to try a good 2-6 antenna barefoot. This would be a good one, but I don't know if they are discontinued or just out of stock. Too bad you can't get those Amphenol antennas they had in the 1950s. Those would probably even work.

Here's the Amphenol 2 Bay antenna from the 1950s.

This one from the 1940s would probably work. The 225 has gain and directivity. Probably could build it DIY. Early models favored Channels 2-4, the earliest big market channels.
