WWJ Astronomy Program

Post by sfpcc1 » Tue Jan 04, 2022 10:29 pm

What is the name of the short blurb about Astronomy on WWJ? It's been around a long time and had changed announcers a few years ago.

StarDate….

From what I can find it’s still on —- although the one announcer retired.

Not quite the same without the sultry voice of Sandy Wood.

It’s easiest to remember WWJ 950, and you can hear it all over the CMU listening area at Night.

Also, in Southwest MI, you can hear it on WBBM 780 and WCFS 105.9.

I love the irony here:
January 3-9: Busy Unicorn
The constellation Monoceros, the unicorn, isn’t much to look at. But it contains some dynamic star systems, including one where two stars recently rammed together, and we’ll have details. Please join us for the unicorn and more.
I'm assuming these ramming stars were a recent discovery, hence the event probably occurred hundreds, if not thousands of years ago!

Is curious, so:
Distance to Monoceros
You can't just go to one location and arrive at the constellation because the constellation is made up of stars at different locations and different distances. The nearest main star in the constellation is at a distance of 147.79 light years and the furthest main star is a distance of 3,929.68 light years. The average distance to the main stars is 1,009.06 light years.

Since they moved the sports to :23 after the hour, StarDate is now at the :20.

I have heard it at 5:20 on Sundays, and 12:20 in the mornings. It does not air at 8:20 when the 'Retirement Education Hour' is airing. Also, it will not be aired when a game is playing. I don't know what the replacement times are for when these happen.

I have also heard it at 10:50 some Sunday evenings.

A sad update to an old thread.
WWJ recently reported the February 15 passing of Sandy Wood, longtime host of the astronomy program StarDate.
She had such a silky, smooth voice, causing a lot of "driveway moments," that need to finish listening to an episode to its very end, before being able to shut off the car and the radio.

Nice obit at Texas Public Radio

WWJ airs StarDate
Mon – Sun 8:22PM
Mon – Sun 12.23AM
Mon – Sun 4:23AM

Since many of the Star Date episodes are timeless or recurrent events, they should have a Star Date Classic feature with Sandy Wood in addition to Billy Henry. Billy Henry does a great job, but I miss the old episodes also. It certainly has worked for Casey Kasem AT40 episodes.
