Love Is The Drug

Post by sfpcc » Fri Mar 12, 2021 11:18 pm

Does anyone out there remember hearing Roxy Music's Love Is The Drug on Detroit radio? I would guess it got some play on WABX and WRIF's overnight Rock Cafe, (probably not WLLZ.) I kind of wonder if it was played any top 40 stations that you can recall? About 15 years ago WCSX played Both Ends Burning at about 3 AM. I don't think they still do that.

From what my ears have heard over the too numerous decades, LITD is the most played Roxy Music song on the radio. It may have gotten some 40 play as it did come out during the disco era.

“Love Is The Drug” by Brian Ferry and Roxy Music from 1975. The song was played on CKLW, WDRQ, WRIF, WABX and WWWW way back in ‘75. I remember that song well.

The song (from "Siren" with Jerry Hall on the cover) went to # 30 (Hot 100) in February 1976. The next single "Dance Away" (from "Manifesto") only went to # 44 in June of 1979. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vhKOuLP ... usic-Topic

“Love Is The Drug” was out at the same time as “How Long” by Ace. Paul Carrack was the lead vocalist on that tune. Thanks sfpcc, for the Great Memories.

Paul Carrack played keyboards for Roxy Music around 1980, (the Flesh And Blood album.) He also has a credit on their final album, 1982's Avalon, (Track 8 / To Turn You On.)

I saw Roxy Music at Cobo during the Avalon tour. I was 15 and it was one of the coolest things I've seen in my life. Weirdly enough I went with two people who were three years older and thought I was annoying, (I kind of was.) I'm still wonder why they let me go with them? Memories.

Paul Carrack is an incredible talent. I think his best song is “Don’t Shed A Tear” from 1988. I think Carrack was also with the group Squeeze for a short while. And yes the memories.

That Siren album with "Love is the Drug" is the album for people who've always been curious about Roxy Music but have never listened to them. I particularly like the guitar solo in "Whirlwind." Avalon is also great but it doesn't have the art rock flash of Siren. Bryan Ferry's In Your Mind album is also a pleasurable experience.

Both Ends Burning is another song from the Siren LP that got some airplay. The best songs, Sentimental Fool and End Of The Line got rare play on the FM stations.

For Whatever it's worth. How Long by Ace and Love is the Drug by Roxy Music were not on the charts at the same time. How Long hit the Billboard chart in March of 1975. Peaked at #3 and was on the hot 100 for 16 weeks. Love Is the Drug hit the Billboard chart one year later in March of 1976. Peaked at #30 and was on the hot 100 for 14 weeks. Love is the Drug did reasonably well in the Grand Rapids/Muskegon markets. It peaked in the Top 20. Great tune.
