Stumbled across this article about who had the first sports talk radio show in Detroit. I'm sure Ron would appreciate this confirmation that he did it before Beckmann.

https://www.talkers.com/tag/ron-cameron/

"First Detroit Sports Talk Show Hosted by Frank Beckmann? Not So Fast… Former longtime Detroit Free Press writer John Smyntek reaches out to TALKERS magazine to let us know that legendary Detroit radio personality Frank Beckmann – who announced his retirement from Cumulus Media’s WJR-AM on Wednesday (it takes effect at the end of March) – was not the first to host a sports talk program on Detroit radio as the press release from WJR claims. Smyntek says, “WXYZ-AM (1270, now WXYT-AM) had the late Dave Diles hosting a daily sports talk and caller dial-in show from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm weeknights starting, I think, in 1967 and running through 1969 or 1970. Then Ron Cameron had a sports call-in format on WXYT-AM under the Chuck Fritz regime for several years in the 1970s, long before Beckmann’s show started.” Smyntek – who retired from the Free Press in 2008 – says Beckmann’s “Sportstalk” program, launched in 1981, was indeed the first sports show to air on WJR-AM."

The Feature Editor of the Detroit Free Press called his planning meeting to order.

"As you all know, our favorite sports talk host, Ron Cameron, is beginning a new chapter in his life and career, starting this Friday, May 7. To mark the occasion, we will be publishing a special section on Cameron that day."

"What kind of tone should we use?" asked the main feature writer.

"Oh, maybe a little light-hearted," responded the Feature Editor. "Cameron's career has been so unpredictable that he makes a Rube Goldberg contraption look like a straight line."

"How about an infographic of the metro Detroit area, charting his paths from radio station to radio station, and from restaurant to restaurant?" asked the feature writer. "Of course, people might mistake it for a spider's web after a windstorm."

"There's the different restaurants he's opened," chimed in the restaurant reviewer. "Pizza, broasted chicken, coney island, bar burgers, frozen yogurt. Now he's talking about a deli. What an epicure!"

The Sports Editor then spoke up. "Well, everybody in town has a good Ron Cameron story. Not sure how many of them would be acceptable for a family newspaper."

The city reporter who covered the casinos had asked his sources about the odds of Cameron making a definite decision about his future by May 7. "Somewhere between 100 to 1 and 1000 to 1."

Next to speak was the obituary editor, who noted the mysterious pattern of older people dying within two years of being interviewed by Cameron. "When someone older than 85 is interviewed, we immediately start putting together the obituary biography of the person.".

The Feature Editor finished the meeting by announcing a title for the special section.

"Just a City Boy, Born and Raised in East Detroit"

Another great contribution, Bobbert. But a mere feature article?! For Scoop’s long-awaited return?! No, this is definitely front page news. Above the fold. And a banner headline, with at least a 72-point font.

I am confident that Ron has made tremendous use of his time being off the air and gaining immunity from the Corona. I expect him to be well into his collaboration of his 50 years in the Detroit media autobiography with Ted Kulfan. I am sure Ron will be well informed on all the goings on in the Professional and Collegiate Sportsworld with his hot takes. Maybe Ron has even learned how to use the Google function on the computer in his spare time. I am also confident that Ron has a high end guest lined up for his grand re-opening as a reward for the thousands of sports fans and listeners that tune in all over the country on their short wave radios and dial up internet connections.
Will Ron return to the air bashing Al Avila over this disaster clown show of a baseball team? Or will he return defending Al saying more time is needed and the prospects still need time? The fans can't wait for the Chris Ilitch story one more time!

As for the shiny guest Ron might have for his long-awaited return, I wonder if he’s been able to coax a surely vaccinated Mark Wilson out of his Covid cave. But not for his Friday show. Ron would want to "promote" his appearance first.

'Twas the night before Friday,
And all through Detroit,
All the creatures were waiting,
For Ron's next exploit.

He'll probably tell them,
With tongue in his cheek,
"No news on my restaurant,
At least 'til next week."

Tomorrow is gonna be a trip. I think we all have a pretty good idea what it’s gonna be like...more of the same, just a month or so break. That being said, I’ll be listening.

From the (purported) horse's mouth:

"It has been a month that I have not been on the airwaves, this is going to be an amazing show tomorrow.

Fully vaccinated and ready to get back on the air on 1460 WPON-AM!

Thank you for your support!"

Somehow, methinks we have a different take on "amazing." Maybe Ron will be offering prizes for his trivia contest winners. It's going to be a long show tomorrow if Kurt's caught unawares of Ron's reemergence. It's going to be a long show tomorrow if Kurt's wise to the goings-on &, as his wont, calls repeatedly.

I hope Ron does not suffer the same fate as Mike Francesa. .Granted Francesa was no Ron Cameron but Ron is still risking his legacy.I hope he reconsiders and does not return.I.want to remember Ron as a sports talk giant not a washed up.has been.

Ron says that Al Avila should not be fired, that the team just needs more better pitching and more hitting (seriously). Whose fault is that?

Kurt got the memo! And what about Scoop's guarantee that he'd have a restaurant announcement on his return?!

Looks like the Tune-in app is no longer hosting WPON.

I like how Martin had to wade through that e-Mail box to pick up the SINGLE e-Mail after six weeks off-air!

No trivia questions. No "Match Game" questions. No restaurant announcement. Yes, an "amazing" show today.

Ron was extremely productive during his 6 week hiatus. What is up with this guy? He says he's not sure if he has the Corona or not? Get a friggin test if your so worried or stop your complainin!

Ron is good with Al Avila's performance since have a top rated minor leagues. Somehow that does not add up.
The professional team is absolutely terrible and have shown no growth.

Keep the restaurant "search" going it promotes conversation and callers, it's amazing how some of the callers feed into his "search"
