Apparently none.

I Don’t believe any of it.
Not holding faith in the utterance of Snopes is wise... The final arbiters of truth at Snopes are a ruddy ex-hooker who's working name was Erin O'bryn, and a Dominatrix/blogger named Kim Dicapria.

This really cannot get any better...

No matter why Jerry Lewis did it he did it and many people were helped. I assume there isnt a charity out there that doesnt make money for somebody but any money that goes to a good cause is a good thing. I have many friends that worked on the Detroit telelthon and they worked their asses off

I always remember Doug Jacobs and the Red Garter Band playing on the WJBK local cut-ins. They added an air of festivity to the show.

Lewis’ history of charity fundraising went back to 1951, when he was part of what’s been called the first telethon, raising money for a New York hospital. What the MDA Labor Day Telethon became in later years was what we recall, but it likely wouldn’t have ever happened without someone with as forceful a personality as Jerry behind it. Like him or not, his efforts had some positive impact on a number of people’s lives. Whether he was a good person in other areas is a different subject altogether.

I judge him on his work, and some of his films are pretty entertaining. I especially liked him in “The King of Comedy”, where he was just an actor, and not writing, producing or directing.

Coolest moment in telethon history. (And yes, Jerry was a Grade A prick.)

The Buzzboard, in some ways, is a little like the old Jerry Lewis Labor Day MDA Telethon: people tune in just to see where the event (discussion) has gone off the rails, and to see what might happen (be posted) next.

I’m usually amused by how far away from the original topic the conversation gets. It’s entertaining in its’ own way, and since the Telethon is gone now, the opportunities to witness such randomness are fewer.

I realize that tuning into any number of radio or tv talk shows would accomplish much the same thing, but the written word allows for its’ own brand of focused ambiguity.

In his own way, Jerry would have been proud, if he weren’t too busy contemplating how the world was so lucky to have known him.

I've had similar thoughts as I read these comments. The show helped to raise funds and awareness about neuromuscular diseases, which benefited several of my family members.

Likewise here. I was on-site for some of the local productions. Some of the area MD kids had continued along to become year-to-year regulars; some from previous years had not survived and were memorialized. I remember one young lady who appeared each year, but now had a voice-assist device that had been provided to her. It was a true thrill to see how joyful she was to be able to communicate in a more "normal" fashion with those around her, as she was about to start college classes. I hope she is still among us and doing OK.

Any of those places around anymore? (Besides Hampton Square, which last time I heard, became offices in the 1990s.)
